"We Just Want to be" a Documentary Film

Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues,
 
So many of you have encouraged me to tell my story about being a child survivor of the UCLA Gender Identity Research Clinic. Thank you for all the ways you’ve already supported this journey!
 
Today I am reaching out to ask for your financial support to raise the seed money to create a documentary film.  As with the exhibition, this project is about all of us in the queer, trans and gender spectrum communities.  
 
I have lived on the front lines of the Queer movement, have witnessed historical events, milestones, and much progress, and of course, setbacks. And to tell this story I will be reaching out to others who were at UCLA and want to share the impact of the experience on their lives.  
 
I am going to tell you a bit about why our stories matter.
 
 Conversion therapies:

• Are supported by this administration.
• Rely on data collected from children.
• Assume a model of illness that can be corrected.
 
As recently as December 2019, a young lesbian killed herself in response to conversion therapies.

Telling our stories links the historical fabrication of illness to the continued trauma our community experiences. My path has been to help us see gender as a spectrum rather than a reductive binary.

If telling our stories can help remove the stigma of mental illness for future generations of queer, trans, and gender spectrum folks, then this documentary can support the work so many are doing to fight for our humanity.
