Behind Every Scar, There Is An Untold Story Of Survival.
Four-year Navy veteran and Para-cyclist David Randall has only one thing on his mind. To qualify for the US National Team and compete at the Tokyo 202ONE Paralympic Games. "The goal will be challenging, but I have never let past challenges stop me from reaching my goals." "Without the support of my family, friends, sponsors, and community, none of this will be possible."  -David Randall

Please read David's story and honor one of our veterans, vhl warriors, and para-cycling hero's.
We understand that everyone has felt the strain of our recent pandemic and may be unable to donate at this time. However, We Still Need You On Our Team! Your efforts to Share David's Story will provide exposure to reach our fundraising goal and raise awareness of VHL in hopes of one day, Finding A Cure.

His Story:
In December of 1995, David began his long flight back to the U.S. from his deployment when he met Dr. Ross Moquin, a Neurosurgeon that specialized in conditions of the spine and brain at Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington, DC. It was the day that David received a Direct Hit to his blindside.
A confirmed diagnosis of a rare genetic mutation disorder: "Von-Hipel Lindau Disease" (VHL) that remained asymptomatic until he reached adulthood.

According to the VHL Alliance, one person in every 32,000 people in the U.S. is affected by the disease and only 200,000 people worldwide.  By sharing David's story, He hopes to raise awareness through VHL Alliance and provide essential resources to others that have experienced major-life trauma from cancer or spinal cord injury. Raising awareness is crucial. Not only is Von-Hippel Lindau disease rare, but complex in its manifestation, therefore difficult to diagnose.

Mothers Love:
At only 21, and a few days before Christmas, David was able to feel his mother's embrace as a team of specialists prepared him for his first spinal cord surgery to remove the tumors that were restricting blood flow to his body. "Honestly, I don't remember what was going through my mind in the days that followed my first spinal cord surgery. I was just a kid. But I knew, even at a young age, that I didn't simply want to survive, I wanted to Live!" -he said.

The Blind Side:
Since David was 21, he's had four spinal cord surgeries and five brain surgeries. After a spinal cord surgery in 2001, he woke up and something felt different. He discovered that he could no longer walk. His doctors expected a full recovery, but during his post-op exam, his condition had not improved. This was the day he would learn how to navigate life from a wheelchair. "Shock, Depression, and Uncertainty settled in until I gained a renewed momentum of hope for my future."
"While navigating life in a chair is the initial blow, our quality of life doesn't have to be compromised," -David Shared

 When David Beat Goliath:
David began an online search for alternate ways to stay in shape and learned about hand-cycling online. He bought his first handbike in the summer of 2003 and fueled his competitive spirit one year later, at the 2004 Detroit Marathon where he ranked fourth overall in the hand-cycling circuit,  which led him to compete in the United States Handcycling Federation’s 2006 circuit. "Handcycling has given me a new purpose and escape from simply living with a diagnosis," David shared

PEDALS TO MEDALS: "Don't Limit Your Challenges, Challenge Your Limits."
His Motto rings true. David has represented Team USA at the World Championships in 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017 & 2018.  He is a 3-Time U.S. National Time Trial Champion, 4-Time U.S. Road Race National Champion, and 4-Time U.S. Criterium National Champion.

2018 National Championships Tour of America Dairy Lands Grafton, WI

UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships, in 2018. The highlight of his career was winning a World Title in 2018 in Italy with his two teammates as they brought home the Gold Title in the team relay event.

"The only thing that has kept me truly engaged in life is the ability to ride." -D. Randall

No Limits: Introducing the benefits of accessible sports to others with spinal cord injuries is a key-element to triggering their overall sense of wellbeing.  Hopefully, I can inspire others to live healthier, stay active, push through their setbacks, and never leave their sense of humor behind. -David Randall

Sponsorship,  Donations, and Budgeting Cost:
Your donation will allow David to maintain financial stability and offset his cost in preparation for the 2021 Paralympic Games. I'm in search of financial sponsors who want to help me make this goal a reality. I would be grateful if I could include you as part of our team. The biggest challenges will be financial due to the sport's high demand for funding as the majority of the cost is solely funded. My target is to raise funds toward the cost of roundtrip airfare, rental-cars, training camps, coaching, nutrition, massage therapy, and cycling equipment.  -David Randall

If you are interested in Direct Sponsorship for any of the above-mentioned, please contact David directly.
 Thank you,  -Theresa Foss

Hello!  If you've made it to the end of our story, You are a Rock-Star!
As a writer, this was the first interview I've done on someone so close to my heart. Interviewing David for our campaign was such a surreal experience for me. There were moments I was beaming with pride and anticipation as he shared triumphs while looking through old high school basketball photos and family memories. There were also moments that I ugly-cried due to his relentless spirit and unbelievable will to not only survive but live.

Thank You For Your Support!

Sincerely,

Theresa Foss
