At one time, my 60 year old Mama was an employed, independent, hard working, outgoing social butterfly who was the life of the party!! For the last 4-5 years, my Mama has slowly become confined to the interior of her home... held hostage by a long oxygen extension tube that marks her path throughout the house, from one room to another. See... she rarely leaves home because she is 100% dependent on oxygen in order to survive. Her "Gills" (lungs) are tired and just do not want to work anymore! Minor tasks that we take for granted such as showering, cooking, washing her hair, and even walking, leave her panicked, winded, and gasping for air. My Mom has severe COPD and Emphysema which unfortunately NEVER gets better. Basically end of life...
After endless doctor appointments, hospitalizations, my Mama finally decided to FIGHT BACK! During one of her hospitalizations for one of several bouts with pneumonia, she made a commitment to enter our local pulmonary rehabilitation program. Once she let go of the FEAR of not being able to breathe while exercising, she entered the program. She was fighting and learning the power of her own willpower!! One day during rehab she learned about the Lung Transplant Program at Duke University Medical Center. She had HOPE!!!
She reached out to them and we started the evaluation process in January of this year!! After multiple extended stays for medical appointments, my Mama has gotten the call that she has been deemed a VIABLE candidate for a DOUBLE LUNG TRANSPLANT!!
Me, my Mama, and my Aunt are about to embark on this journey to "Get My Mama Some New Air"!! We have been called to report and will be relocating in the next two weeks over to the Raleigh/Durham area permanently for an undetermined amount of time. We've heard that it could be a long as 9 months, pre and post transplant. She is scared, grateful, and positive all a the same time!
What will our days look like?
* Countless doctor/specialist appointments (pre/post transplant)
*Hospital Stays (pre/post transplant)
*Pulmonary Rehabilitation (pre/post transplant)
*Caregiver Classes
My Mama understands that this is a precious, divine, opportunity that has been granted, however, there is extensive medical costs and expenses that are not being covered by medical insurance. That is where we need your help!
