Malika Johnson is my daughter, and she was a full time college student and a server at Gladys Knight Chicken and Waffles in 2013-2014. She was four months away from graduating from college with a degree as a Funeral Home Director, when she started to feel the effects of an oncoming demyelinating disease called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis - ADEM. She had been sick several times with dizzy spells, fevers, and vertigo several months prior to her first major attack which caused her to go to the emergency room in March of 2014, after waking up as a Quadriplegic, incapable of walking, talking, or having basic control over bodily functions. Her financee' was with her and took care of her as much as he and his family could. Maleka had another attack of ADEM in June 2014 and several more thereafter. The disease turned into Auto Immune Encephalitis, which means her antibodies were mistakenly eating her brain and spinal cord, developing legions that caused permanent brain stem damage. No cures exist for demyelinating diseases and their progression, and symptoms are different for everyone. Currently, she is Quadriplegic and not capable of speech, eating, drinking, or movement in any part of her body without great effort or from reflexes. She is able to smile and blink her eyes to communicate, which is a blessing to us all. The encephalitis did not damage her memories, or take away who she is. She is capable of carrying on a conversation and answering questions by just using her eyes. Her memory is better than mine. She is also able to understand everything that has happened to her. Nevertheless, she continues to remain positive in the face of this tragedy. We hope this funding will help with medical bills, special equipment, relocation to a closer facility or parhaps home, and expenses in connection with her illness. Please support this campaign. Please help us make sure Malika can live at home with us, or at least closer to her family and friends. Although she has not improved according to the doctors; we won't give up praying for her to improve as much as she can. It's also very important that she stays connected to her friends and family as much as possible. Please help us so she won’t face the rest of her life separated from the ones she loves. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. No amount is too small! Thank you and God Bless.
