Hola all, this is Trisha Martinez & Rosario Rodriguez, your favorite tag team and dream team. We will be going to different parts of Guatemala this spring, but we would really like to give back to Rosario’s home town in Palencia, Guatemala. Especially for the students (youth).

Our goal is to fundraise roughly $500 USD (equivalent to Q3,500. The Q is for quetzales, their national currency) be to purchase school supplies (such as rulers, calculators, notebooks, backpacks, pencils, pens, folders, scissors & etc) in her town in Guatemala and to distribute them for a classroom at a school that is located in the mountains (also known as a the rural/country side). We understand that everyone is going through a rough financial period, so instead we ask if you all would be so kind to share this gofundme for others who may be in a better situation to donate ☺️

Guatemala is a developing country with a large economic gap between those in poverty and those that are more privileged. The municipality of Palencia belongs to the department of Guatemala City. In 1994, there were about 34,239 residents, in 2002 there were about 47,705 inhabitants, (14,164 live in the urban area and 33,541 live in the rural area). Now it has more than 70,900 inhabitants with 52% in the rural area and 48% in the urban area. Overall Palencia is a very small town similar to the North Fork and South Fork of Long Island, New York.

In Palencia, 57% live in poverty & 42% live in extreme poverty. Academically, many drop out at a younger age to work or migrate to the United States. In a recent 2020 data, there was a decrease of 73.48% in young people attending some type of education either in high school, elementary or college.

As you know receiving a higher education is key to being able to navigate life and career even if it is just graduating from High School. Many of our families in Latin America only obtain an elementary level education or high school education if they are lucky. Education in Latin America is really determined by their financial stability. Which in this case is very low since a majority of Rosario’s town live in poverty. Even though Palencia has grown and improved so much in the past few years than ever before, it still needs the help and support whenever possible.

For me, Trisha, this is an opportunity to give back to kids who are in need basic resources in order to achieve those small wins that will then later turn into a big win such as graduating. I feel driven to help fellow Latinos especially the youth in countries like Guatemala. For Rosario, she understands how immigrating to the U.S. with her family helped her be in the position where she is, not only through sacrifice and hard work, but how her environment truly played a role in her life. Neither of our families has ever forgotten about our roots, which is why we feel it’s important and impactful to give back to her town. A town that needs a little faith and hope to continue their dreams and not give up - starting with a pen & paper

Hola a todos, es Trisha Martínez y Rosario Rodríguez, su equipo favorito. Esta primavera iremos a diferentes partes de Guatemala, pero realmente nos gustaría contribuir a la ciudad natal de Rosario en Palencia, Guatemala. Especialmente para los estudiantes (jóvenes).

Nuestro objetivo es recaudar aproximadamente $500 USD (equivalente a Q3,500. La Q es de quetzales, su moneda nacional) para comprar útiles escolares (reglas, calculadoras, cuadernos, mochilas, lápices, bolígrafos, carpetas, tijeras y demás) en su pueblo en Guatemala y distribuirlos para un salón de clases en una escuela que está ubicada en la montaña (también conocida como una zona rural). Entendemos que todos están pasando por un período financiero difícil, por lo que les preguntamos si serían tan amables de compartir este gofundme para otras personas que puedan estar en una mejor situación para donar ☺️

Guatemala es un país en desarrollo con una gran brecha económica entre quienes viven en la pobreza y quienes son más privilegiados. El municipio de Palencia pertenece al departamento de Ciudad de Guatemala. En 1994 había alrededor de 34.239 residentes, en 2002 había alrededor de 47.705 habitantes (14.164 viven en el área urbana y 33.541 viven en el área rural). Ahora cuenta con más de 70.900 habitantes con el 52% en el área rural y el 48% en el área urbana. En general, Palencia es una ciudad muy pequeña similar a North Fork y South Fork de Long Island, Nueva York.

En Palencia, el 57% vive en la pobreza y el 42% vive en la pobreza extrema. Académicamente, muchos abandonan los estudios a una edad más temprana para trabajar o migrar a Estados Unidos. En un dato reciente de 2020, se registró una disminución del 73.48% en jóvenes que asisten a algún tipo de educación ya sea en secundaria, primaria o universidad.

Como sabes, recibir una educación superior es clave para poder navegar la vida y la carrera, incluso si recién te gradúas de la escuela secundaria. Muchas de nuestras familias en América Latina solo obtienen educación primaria o secundaria si tienen suerte. La educación en América Latina está realmente determinada por su estabilidad financiera. Lo cual en este caso es muy bajo ya que la mayoría del pueblo Rosario vive en pobreza. Aun que Palencia ha mejorado en los últimos años recientemente, siempre necesitan ayuda

Para mí, Trisha, esta es una oportunidad para retribuir a los niños que necesitan recursos básicos para lograr esas pequeñas victorias que luego se convertirán en una gran victoria, como graduarse. Me siento impulsado a ayudar a mis compañeros latinos, especialmente a los jóvenes de países como Guatemala. Para Rosario, ella entiende cómo emigrar a los Estados Unidos con su familia la ayudó a estar en la posición en la que se encuentra, no solo a través del sacrificio y el trabajo duro, sino también cómo su entorno realmente jugó un papel en su vida. Ninguna de nuestras familias se ha olvidado nunca de nuestras raíces, por lo que sentimos que es importante e impactante contribuir a su ciudad. Un pueblo que necesita un poco de fe y esperanza para continuar con sus sueños y no darse por vencido, empezando con lápiz y papel
