I am Maggie Stephenson, and I need your support to become a Global Citizen! This coming March, I will have an amazing opportunity that I might not get again for a while--if ever. 

I am going to Costa Rica with a group of middle school students and 3 teachers from my school-- Evergreen Community Charter School in Asheville, NC.

We are not going as tourists, but as members of a global educational experience. We will connect with middle school students in Monteverde and experience student-led Spanish immersion, and cultural exchanges. We will study alternatives to deforestation and visit the Santa Elena Cloud Forest where we will participate in local agriculture and sustainable development by planting trees in a Monteverde reserve. We will learn about the rich cultural traditions of the region, and have the unique opportunity to study Costa Rica’s ecology and biodiversity through challenging outdoor adventure activities. We will explore a new world and work with community partners to celebrate natural and human beauty.

Why do I want to go? I would like to go because I want to see a different culture. I want to be more aware of poverty and resources. It will also be a good chance to get to know my peers and live together under new circumstances. I would love to go on this trip and discover new places and new beginnings. I want to break out of my own little box and see what life is like in another country.

When I get back to the United States, I'll be sharing what I learned, through presentations to classes and community groups.
