A project with lower costs and zero bureaucracy, only relationships of trust!!

My name is Fulvio Vicenzo and I am an international development practitioner. For over thirty years I have been working on issues related to agriculture, climate resilience, and the development of local communities. My work takes me to different countries around the world, often in rural and marginalized contexts, supporting projects built together with local communities.

It was during a recent mission in the border area between Eswatini and Mozambique that I arrived in the village of Goba. Over the years I have seen many difficult situations, but what I found there struck me in a different way. I entered a primary school with nearly 500 children, with teachers who are present, attentive, and deeply committed to their work. A school that is alive, despite everything.

And yet, in that context, the essentials were missing: there is no safe drinking water, and there are no functioning toilets. Children stay at school for hours without access to water and, when they need to go to the bathroom, they are forced to use inadequate, exposed spaces, with no protection for their health or dignity.

This is happening in one of the poorest countries in the world, where the State lacks the resources to guarantee basic services even in public schools, and where international cooperation, although present, is still unable to cover such fundamental needs. It is precisely this contrast — between the extraordinary commitment of people and the absence of minimum conditions — that makes this situation difficult to accept.

Let’s help bring water and sanitation to this school. Let’s help restore dignity to these children.

Mi chiamo Fulvio Vicenzo e sono un operatore della cooperazione internazionale. Da oltre trenta anni lavoro su temi legati all’agricoltura, alla resilienza climatica e allo sviluppo delle comunità locali. Il mio lavoro mi porta a viaggiare in diversi paesi del mondo, spesso in contesti rurali e marginali, per accompagnare progetti costruiti insieme alle comunità. È stato durante una recente missione nell’area di confine tra Eswatini e Mozambico che sono arrivato nel villaggio di Goba. In questi anni ho visto molte situazioni difficili, ma quello che ho trovato lì mi ha colpito in modo diverso. Sono entrato in una scuola primaria con quasi 500 bambini e bambine, insegnanti presenti, attenti, profondamente coinvolti nel loro lavoro. Una scuola viva, nonostante tutto. Eppure, in quel contesto, mancava l’essenziale: non c’è acqua potabile, non ci sono bagni funzionanti. I bambini e bambine restano a scuola per ore senza accesso all’acqua e, quando devono andare in bagno, sono costretti a usare spazi non adeguati, esposti, senza alcuna tutela della loro salute e dignità. Questo avviene in un paese tra i più poveri al mondo, dove lo Stato non ha le risorse per garantire servizi di base nemmeno nelle scuole pubbliche, e dove anche la cooperazione internazionale, pur presente, non riesce a coprire bisogni così fondamentali. È proprio questo contrasto — tra l’impegno straordinario delle persone e l’assenza di condizioni minime — che rende questa situazione difficile da accettare.
