Josephine, Benon, and Gilbert are not just survivors — they are Queer activists who dared to stand up for the rights of LGBTQ+ people inside Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, one of the most dangerous places in the world to be Queer.

Fleeing Uganda’s brutal anti-LGBTQ+ laws, they sought safety in Kakuma — a camp Kenyan authorities promoted as a refuge for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. But as Amnesty International reported in May 2023, Kakuma is “not yet safe for LGBTI asylum seekers,” documenting widespread harassment, physical violence, and even arson attacks on Queer refugees.

Inside this environment of fear, Josephine, Benon, and Gilbert organised resistance, offered peer support, and demanded basic dignity for LGBTQ+ residents. Their courage came at a devastating cost — they were beaten, hunted, and forced to flee after one of their colleagues was brutally killed and burnt alive for speaking out.

Now, they are in hiding in Kenya, unable to work or move freely, constantly at risk of arrest or deportation. Returning to Kakuma would be a death sentence.

These are Queer human rights defenders, persecuted for their bravery and compassion. They urgently need support to cover rent, food, and safety needs as they continue to fight for their lives and for Queer liberation in East Africa.
