QUEER HOUSEHOLD LOOKING FOR SAFTEY

Hi!

My name is Tobi or Tilly (or cow, depending on what part of the internet you know me from,) and my three housemates and I need help.

Our Situation

We live in Wisconsin, a majority red state with increasing hostility towards queer folk, in a traditionally conservative and bigoted area. Wisconsin currently stands at the 4th lowest population of trans people in the US.

All four of us have faced harassment, slurs, threats, and worse.

I cannot keep a job due to the active homophobia and transphobia that I face. Both my roommate and I have had people come into our workplaces and proceed to threaten us. I’ve had children yanked out of my path in the aisles of grocery stores. When acts of transphobia have happened in our workplaces, management has typically does very little, if any action is taken at all.

Retaining a job and living life in the public eye while being visibly queer/trans is becoming more dangerous & difficult the longer we are here.

In addition, our living conditions in our current apartment are unsafe. Things like frequent gas leaks, pipes bursting, molding walls & pipes, and actively transphobic neighbors are the norm.

It is undeniable that as a queer household, we are unsafe here.

Where the funds are going

For the sake of clarity and reliability, I've broken down where funds will be going in our move.

1,500 ~ Preliminary visit - scoping out places to live, including plane tickets, motel fees, and food costs. Additional funds for public transit costs while visiting.

2,000 ~ Apartment down payment - including a safety net for things like pet rent and additional fees.

3,000 ~ Moving stuff - U-haul shipments & the fees that come with it.

1,700 ~ Road trip ~ Transport of our vehicle and Us for the move itself, including gas costs, preliminary car repair, motel fees, and food costs.

1,200 ~ Furniture replacement - We have a polycule of three currently sharing a queen bed, and will need a new mattress & frame. For the sake of moving costs, we will be leaving some of our furniture behind.

Everything Else ~ Accounting for things like the anxiety medication we'll need to take our cat* on a 30-hour road trip, the potential of gas prices fluctuating, and a safety net for unforeseen costs.
