Quality of life for our loving mom, Ana Cantera.

My name is Brenda, and I am reaching out to kindly ask for your support for my mother, Ana Cantera, who, at 68, is facing a tough battle with Stage 3C ovarian cancer and a malignant tumor located between her stomach and liver. This challenge began unexpectedly on December 22, 2023, with an emergency room visit that led to a significant turning point in her life. Unfortunately, she ended up in a hospital that discriminated against her due to her lack of health insurance. Since then, we have dealt with minimal attention at the first hospital, misinformation, and constant inconclusive diagnoses. Meanwhile, the majority of the hospital staff/doctors were on vacation due to the holidays. Safe to say, if it weren't for my brother Julian and I, I'm sure we would have continued to be misled while wasting time. We remained resilient, spent hours at the hospital daily, never stopped advocating for our mom, while constantly applying pressure to make the necessary procedures done as soon as possible. In fact, we had to move mountains, do the impossible, to get help from a different hospital since the 1st hospital did not do anything to help but refused to release her.

For those who don't know, Ana has always been a fighter. She is a beautiful person who has always showered the people around her with nothing but love and wisdom. To know her is to really love her. She remains determined to fight this illness, though it has unfortunately impacted her ability to work. As an immigrant, she is without the usual support mechanisms such as government aid, health insurance, or Medicaid. Charity care has thankfully covered her medical treatments, but the financial responsibility for daily living expenses has fallen on our family. We encountered further challenges due to a hospital oversight, which made receiving the necessary care more difficult because of her insurance status. This situation necessitated active advocacy from us, her family, highlighting the importance of patient-centered care within the healthcare system.

At this time, I am appealing to your generosity to help ease the burden on my mom, Ana, and the rest of our family. Your support is more than financial assistance; it's a gesture of community solidarity and hope. We are asking you to join us in supporting Ana through this difficult time and helping to show her that she is not forgotten. Mi nombre es Brenda y me acerco para pedirles amablemente su apoyo para mi madre, Ana Cantera, quien a sus 68 años enfrenta una dura batalla contra el cáncer de ovario en etapa 3C y un tumor maligno que se encuentra entre el estómago y el hígado. Este desafío comenzó inesperadamente el 22 de diciembre de 2023, con una visita a la sala de emergencias que marco un importante punto de inflexión en su vida; donde lamentablemente terminó en un hospital que la discriminó por su falta de seguro médico. Desde entonces, Ana tuvo que lidiar con esta enfermedad mientras le daban la mínima atención, desinformación y constantes diagnósticos no concluyentes; mientras tanto, la mayoría del personal y los médicos del hospital estaban libres debido a las vacaciones por los dias de fiestas. Es seguro decirlo, si no fuera por mi hermano Julian y yo, estoy segura de que nos habrían seguido engañando mientras perdíamos el tiempo. Nos mantuvimos resistentes, pasamos horas en el hospital todos los días, nunca dejamos de defender a nuestra madre y al mismo tiempo presionamos constantemente para que los procedimientos necesarios se realizaran lo antes posible. De hecho, si no fuera por nosotros haciendo lo imposible, Tuvimos que mover montañas para conseguir ayuda de otro hospital ya que el primer hospital no hizo nada para ayudar pero se negó a darle el alta para transferirla.

Para aquellos que no lo saben; Ana siempre ha sido una luchadora: es una persona hermosa que siempre llena y regala a las personas que la rodean con nada más que amor y sabiduría. Conocerla es amarla de verdad. Sigue decidida a luchar contra esta enfermedad, aunque lamentablemente ha afectado su capacidad para trabajar. Como inmigrante, no cuenta con los mecanismos de apoyo habituales, como ayuda del gobierno, seguro médico o Medicaid. Afortunadamente, el Charity Care ha cubierto sus tratamientos médicos, pero la responsabilidad financiera de los gastos de vida diarios ha recaído en nuestra familia. Encontramos más desafíos debido a un descuido hospitalario, que hizo que recibir la atención necesaria fuera más difícil debido a su estado de seguro. Esta situación requirió una defensa activa por parte de nosotros, su familia, destacando la importancia de la atención centrada en el paciente dentro del sistema de salud.

En este momento, apelo a su generosidad para ayudar a aliviar la carga de mi mamá, Ana, y el resto de nuestra familia. Su apoyo es más que asistencia financiera; es un gesto de solidaridad y esperanza comunitaria.
