Hi. My name is Marlene Rollins and I am trying to raise funds for my friend Cathy South to have what we hope will be her final neck surgery. Cathy has been in constant pain for over 10 years. After surgeries and therapy they have given a name to her problem.
Cathy has what is called a chiari malformation. It is a birth defect and her doctor feels that it is what has caused her chronic pain and issues with her neck for the past 10 years or so. A chiari malformation is when the hole at the bottom of your skull is too small and causes the cerebellum to grow down into the spinal column. There are varying types and varying severity. Cathy's is type 1 and her cerebellum has grown done almost to the bottom of her first vertebrae. He will go in and remove bone at the bottom of Cathy's skull and from the top vertebrae to give her brain the space that it needs and preventing later issues. He originally planned to cut the dura and place a patch inside of it to give her brain even more space. When Cathy met with him yesterday, he decided that he is going to avoid cutting the dura if possible. This will make the recovery easier and her stay in the hospital shorter. He will make a final decision about whether or not to cut the dura when he actually get in there during surgery. So a huge prayer request is that he will not have to cut the dura.
As you know with Donnie being in the ministry and Cathy teaching and tutoring they will be missing a couple of paychecks as she has the surgery and therapy. I am trying to raise money to help cover expenses while she is in the hospital and recovering. Cathy's recovery time is 7 to 8 weeks but this is subject to change. As of now, her surgery is scheduled for November 17th. Any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to give please pray for Cathy and her family as she has this surgery.
