College for a Better Future

I have a sister whose name is #JordanLeeAlleyne.   As the year began, her horizons looked bright.  Then COVID-19 sought to dim her spirits.  This is her story.

In December 2020, Jordan-Lee visited me in Calgary, Canada.  While there, she applied to the college I attend.  A short while afterwards, she was confirmed into the Film and Video Production program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).  I am so thankful to Censored that her dream to study can come true with the help of kind supporters of GoFundMe #CollegeForABetterFuture as she seeks to finance her first year of studies.

My sister lives on the beautiful island of Barbados.  There is sunshine, practically year-round and beaches almost everywhere.  However, this tropical paradise has been hard hit by the effects of COVID-19.  Employment has been massively reduced and chances of people finding a job are even less for those without qualifications.

WHY CANADA?

Jordan-Lee chose to study in Canada in order to get international knowledge and experience in her field of study.  By choosing Calgary, she would have moral support, assistance and guidance as I am studying there and our family friend who resides in that city has offered her accommodation and meals.  I am so grateful to our generous friend for this wonderful gesture.  My sister also chose to study in Canada because for her, coming from Barbados, studying is more affordable in Canada than in most of the other international cities.  Another benefit is that she would be allowed to work while she studies and this would offset some of the cost.

ON THE BREADLINE

In March, Barbados recorded its first cases of COVID-19.  In a few short weeks, our dad was on the breadline. As an artist, with his main clientele comprising of the tourist market, it has been difficult for him to generate business since no one is travelling.  Our mother is a home school teacher who is in the process of starting her own businesses to assist the family of six.  Neither is able to play a major role in the funding of her education at this point.

KEEPING HOPE ALIVE

Even though the COVID-19 situation attempted to cloak her life with a dark shadow, Jordan-Lee chose to remain optimistic.  She trusted Censored to keep hope alive.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION

Our family believes that no matter our financial status, we should aim to receive the best education possible and choose to study what we love.  Jordan -Lee has begun to create fundraisers and apply for grants and scholarships to help pay her way.  However, these activities take time to materialize so your participation in her education is very important and would be so appreciated.

DEADLINES

We must make the most of time . If she doesn’t pay her college registration by their deadline, her seat will be forfeited.  She wants to raise the 7348.44 CAD balance for her first semester by July 20, 2020. This would allow her time to then focus on her travel and airline expenses, books, materials, equipment and personal expenses, estimated at 8,199 CAD.

The tuition for her second semester will be due in December 2020.

She is thankful for all the help so far but she does need a miracle to make it.  I invite you to help create that miracle.  Her goal may seem impossible but nothing is impossible with Censored.

FILM AND VIDEO

Jordan-Lee believes that film and video is a worthy profession.  Film and video production can be utilized to spread the gospel, document history, disseminate information, educate the public, share stories, promote goods and services, celebrate seasons, provide wholesome entertainment and the list goes on.  During crises like COVID-19, film and video producers are on the front-line, collecting footage related to the virus in order to transmit news around the globe.  She, too, wishes to impact the world with the information she captures on tape.

IN SERVICE OF OTHERS

My sibling also believes that service is important.  It is her privilege to have been a part of community groups such as Youth with a Mission, United Youth Leaders of Barbados, Toastmasters International, and Junior Optimist International (where she served as president and was the Barbados winner of the 2019 Essay Contest of the Caribbean District of Optimist International).   All these experiences have been valuable as she found that her life becomes richer when shared with others.
