Angel Alexus McFadden is a 22 year old who was born with Hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a complex and rare heart defect present at birth. The left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped in hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Her first open heart surgery was performed when she was 6 days old. The Norwood procedure. The second open heart surgery was performed at 1 year of age. The Glenn procedure. Third open heart was performed at 2 years old. The Fontan procedure. There have been many procedures since to keep her heart functioning. Finally, they decided her heart could not sustain her life anymore and she would have to undergo a heart transplant. This surgery was a few days ago. There have been many complications. Today, April 19th, she is having her right leg amputated below the knee due to a complication from the monitor the doctors placed to check circulation in her extremities.
"At 22 years old my heart is failing. I will need a heart transplant to survive and I can no longer do the things I love doing. I also know what this will mean to another family for me to receive the heart of their loved one. The emotional impact of this is overwhelming. I know I need to focus on the obvious physical aspects: the illness, the operation, and the healing. But that can be profound, both for me, my family, and friends." Angel.
Although we realize these are hard times financially for so many, we are asking those who can help to donate. We had estimated that her stay would be three weeks in the hospital; now with all the complications, the doctors feel it may be months. We have held other fund raisers and have accumulated a few thousand. But, not near enough. We have inquired about grants and other things available for transplants, but have had no response.
