Ximena’s world was forever changed in March when she was suddenly diagnosed with Stage IV Medulloblastoma- numerous tumors were found all over her brain and spine. Prior to this diagnosis, Ximena was a normal third grader- she’d just performed in her school’s production of Peter Pan Jr and was excelling in third grade. She has always been a happy, energetic Taylor Swift fan who loves spending time with her big sister and little brother.
Since her diagnosis, she has had multiple brain surgeries and has been hospitalized continuously since March. Her parents stay with her at the hospital while also juggling two other kids at home. This has been physically and emotionally exhausting and made it impossible for them to work while Ximena is still hospitalized.
She had undergone extensive chemotherapy and 25 rounds of radiation. Unfortunately she developed a rare complication and the shunt in her head that kept swelling down got infected, so on her 9th birthday in May, she had emergency brain surgery. Since then, she has battled fevers for days with no explainable cause, as well as several other complications from being hospitalized for so long. Because of the location of the tumors, they are unable to operate on them without serious risk of Ximena becoming blind and deaf.
