Yauco Theatre Project

In short

Help us fund local theatre artists to come teach their craft and share their performances with high school students in the small town of Yauco, Puerto Rico!

From one afternoon...

This past winter we went to Puerto Rico as part of a study abroad trip with New York University. As part of that program, our group drove to a small city on the south side of the island called Yauco where we led a workshop for high school students attending an arts-based public school. The students had a great response to our time together and it got several of us thinking about ways to offer all students in that town more learning opportunities in theatre.

...to a lasting connection: Why it Matters

This project came about for a few reasons. First, the kids were so great we just want the opportunity to work with them further. Secondly, we recognize that our ability to move around the island and work with so many great local artists was a privilege the students in Yauco haven't necessarily had access to. Our hope is to use those connections we made to help the students bridge any physical divide between their artistic interests and artists on the island. Thirdly, in speaking with our contact at the central theatre in Yauco (Teatro Ideal), we realized it's still a challenge to get artists to make the trek down to the city.

In response to all of this, two of us have been working with our contact in Yauco to offer a free, week-long workshop to high school students in Yauco after the school year lets out in June.

Supporting Local Artists

Our hope is to raise funds to bring as many guest teaching artists to Yauco during that week as possible, with the potential of also bringing a performance from San Juan as well. Unfortunately, a lot of this is turning out to be more expensive than we anticipated so we're organizing this campaign to help pay for the costs of the local artists and other expenses related to this project.

The Financial Goal

Our goal is to raise $3,500 by April 14th, with a stretch goal of $6,000 that would allow us to bring an amazing theatre performance from San Juan for the whole community to enjoy. Any remaining funds not used for project expenses will be donated to the local cultural center, Teatro Ideal, to continue supporting arts programming in the city.
