Help with Temporary Housing

We are going to be kicked out of our home for two months for an HOA plumbing renovation in our building. They are turning off the plumbing and electricity so people cannot stay here.

That might not seem like a big deal if you live most places, but if you live here, this is a huge problem.
If you need to get a hotel here, they are $300-$500 and upwards a night. We need two months.

There are not many long term rentals, because people can make more off of short term vacation rentals, and they won’t discount for long stays that residents need during peak tourist season, which is when this project is now happening.

We don’t know anyone here well enough to live with them for two months. (We barely know anyone here at all. Covid hit soon after we relocated.)

When they finally gave us the project dates, we started looking for rentals, and we finally found two vacation rentals back to back. We just booked them, and we only have 24 hours to cancel.

It is going to cost us about 10 grand. (This is an Air B&B studio…)

We also won’t have a kitchen, so we will have to eat out a good bit. We will have to pay for laundry at least every other day for Parker’s work clothes. And this all takes gas, which is expensive here.

So we are going to have increased expenses that we didn’t plan for.*** It’s not like eating out or doing laundry anywhere else on earth. One hamburger is like $15-$20 here. Again, tourism drives up the price of everything.

In short, we are being asked to pay for a two month vacation in Hawai’i, basically. Ouch!

I feel very fortunate we even found a place to rent today finally (Praise the maker!) That was nothing short of a miracle.

We would go to the mainland and stay with friends and family, but Parker has to work or we won’t have health insurance.

And…if the construction dates move at all, we will have to get some hotel nights on the back end, or else sleep in our car. Which I WILL do, but I can’t seem to convince Parker that this is an ok idea.

This is going to sound crazy, but I see people getting coffee, whiskey, and medical expenses paid for, as well as other things bought for them online. So I thought, “why not ask for help with our sudden housing expense?” (This is taking a lot for me to post this, because I do not like to ask for help. If I do, it’s legit.)

I know a lot of people think we are well off because we live here, but we live simply and are quite frugal. We aren’t destitute, but I am retired, and we do have a budget to adhere to. We do not have a mortgage.

If you can give $5, $10 or $20 or even more towards this sudden housing cost, we would really appreciate it. Think of it like buying us a coffee or a lunch. Or keeping Parker out of sleeping in a car.

***As for our lack of better planning: we knew they were going to do this project, but we were told there “wasn’t going to be much impact to our unit,” and we might have to leave for a couple of days or maybe 2 weeks. No problem- we could swing that.

When they did this project in another building, we saw owners in that building living there, so we didn’t know we would have to evacuate, until this week. Apparently the rules have changed for our building.

We appreciate anything you are moved to do. I will make some videos of our rental so you can see what your money went towards.

If you cannot do anything, we understand- no need to contact me or Parker and say why. We will still love you.

Thank you for even considering this. ❤️
