Hello, my name is Kari and I am fundraising on behalf of my fiancé, Darrell. On February 8, 2018 I took Darrell to the emergency room and several hours later we were told news that would change our lives, Darrell had end stage renal (kidney) failure. Together his kidneys were functioning at 8% and had no chance of recovery. Darrell was diagnosed with Focal segmental glomerular sclerosis (FSGS), a rare disease that causes scarring in the filters of the kidneys. Darrell began dialysis and spent the next several months completing hemodialysis three times a week at 4am. He then became the first patient at his clinic to start peritoneal dialysis. He became an advocate at his clinic and spoke with newly incoming patients about how to complete PD. In 2019 Darrell completed his Bachelors degree and began working again. Through the next several years Darrell would struggle with worsening medical issues including a hernia surgery in his diaphragm, reoccurring pneumonia, and being diagnoses with heart failure. Despite this, he continued to be a beacon of happiness and hope. On December 1st, 2023 we received a call, a kidney was available and it was a match! We went into UW Hospital and on December 2nd Darrell received his transplant after almost 6 years of waiting. He is currently recovering well and the kidney is working! Darrell and I are asking for your generous donation to assist with covering the medical costs from his surgery as his insurance will only cover 80%. This will also help pay for standard bills as he is expected to be out of work for the next 6-8 weeks. I will also be out of work for two weeks while assisting with transport to medical appointments and basic care during his recovery. Any amount is greatly appreciated, more than I can truly express in words. We are so grateful for the people in our lives that have stood with us through everything Darrell has been through.
