Help Todd to recover - it takes a village

Donation protected
Hi. I am fundraising for my friend Todd Kart. Todd was in a very serious bicycling accident on June 12. He suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), broke his orbital bones and nose, and is visually impaired. Recovery will take months, if not years. Todd will need nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy and adaptive equipment.

Please help Todd during his recovery by contributing to this fund. The funds will be gifted directly to an account his wife Jodi will have exclusive access to. The money will be used to supplement what is not covered by healthcare insurance and to pay for healthcare insurance when Todd’s leave of absence from work has expired.

Todd’s story:

Todd is currently at Mercy Hospital’s Rehab Institute in Pittsburgh. While this is exactly where Todd needs to be, it is designed to be a short-term solution. Upon his upcoming discharge, there are two options. One is to transfer him to a Skilled Nursing Facility. In this case, insurance will pay for approximately three weeks of his stay. Beyond the three weeks, all costs will have to be out of pocket. The second option is to bring Todd home. This will require 24/7 private home health care, which insurance will not pay for.

Todd’s family was told that his physical abilities would progress more quickly than his cognitive abilities. His feeding tube has been removed and he is currently on a soft food diet. He can walk about 60 yards with the assistance of one to two therapists. Todd is a CPA and has an MBA. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he teaches Accounting and Finance. When asked to list as many words that begin with the letter “m” in one minute, Todd could name only one. He thinks he is currently living in Wisconsin, where he lived from 2003 – 2006. It is an understatement to say that Todd’s cognitive abilities are lagging.

While positivity prevails, it is unknown if Todd will ever be able to work again. It is also unknown how long his recovery will take or if he will make a full recovery. Every Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) patient is unique, so every patient’s outcome is unique. No doctor can assure us if Todd will make a full recovery.
