For the past 27 years, Women's Health Services (WHS) has provided abortion and family planning services to the Greater Boston Community and beyond. WHS has been dedicated to offering high quality, safe and supportive care in an attractive and comfortable environment that also celebrates and supports women’s diverse roles and strengths. We believe that every person seeking abortion and/or family planning services should be ensured good care, regardless of their ability to pay. Many of our patients are uninsured, under-insured, can't afford costly care at hospitals , and require hospital level care.
Unfortunately, due to a loss of grant funding, we have reached the point where the continual support we get from the community cannot offset for this deficit in funding. We are at a crossroads. WHS will have to close within the next three months if we do not receive sustaining donor support.
Our out-of-pocket procedures are revenue neutral, and almost half of our patients fall into this category. We also serve patients who are on MassHealth (Medicaid) which reimburses us a rate less than 50% of the cost of care. In an effort to fully serve our community, at least two-thirds of the necessary procedures we provide break even or operate at a financial loss.
Please note, these statistics are from 2017 and have increased since.
WHS is the only non-hospital provider of abortion up to the legal gestational limit in Massachusetts. If our clinic disappeared, many New Englanders would not have their urgent medical needs met. As an independent provider that serves a vulnerable population and receives no government funding in politically uncertain times, it is devastating to imagine WHS closing its doors.
