On January 4, 2020, the Cockettes Are Golden: A 50th Anniversary Celebration premiered at the Victoria Theatre to much acclaim. We were set to do more shows to continue the celebration. All that was scrapped due to Covid.
We are now creating a new revue for Oasis SF in June called Cockettes Eternal Emmissions. We are currently in pre-production.
We need to raise money for publicity, marketing, rehearsal space, wardrobe, an extra sound engineer, body mics, and more pay for a large cast and crew.
The Cockettes were established on Dec 31, 1969 at the Palace Theater in a haze of sex, drugs, drag, genderbending, and glitter. They took drag and old Hollywood musicals and turned them inside out and upside down, attracting the attention of the American underground culture. The Cockette’s sprawling, kaleidoscopic pantheon of colorful personalities included icons like Hibiscus and Sylvester. Their midnight antics attracted drag superstar Divine, actress Mink Stole, and cult filmmaker John Waters. The Cockettes were ahead of their time, especially in the acceptance of gender fluidity, and they changed the face of drag forever.
They are an essential part of queer San Francisco history.
People who donate will be thanked in the program and get a special Thank You gift when they attend the show.
