During my time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi, two of my exceptional students passed their national exams with high enough marks that they got accepted into the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Unfortunately in Malawi there is very little opportunity for financial scholarship and without outside support these students would be stuck in their rural village without means to better themselves. Frank Mwandira started last year and thanks to the amazing support of friends and family we've been able to pay his tuition to get him this far and he is on track to graduate in 3 years. Rodgers Sikwese was accepted to the same program this year and he has moved across the country to live with Frank in the capital city. They support each other as they pursue the same degree and keep me updated on their academic progress, daily life, and challenges.
These two young men are truly amazing. Throughout secondary school they both supported themselves by finding odd jobs to pay for food, clothes, rent, and notebooks. During secondary school, I helped them pay school fees because although their families are supportive of education, there was no possible way for them to afford tuition. Despite these challenges, Frank and Rodgers not only passed national exams with some of the best marks in the school but also found time to help out with the garden we were starting at school. Their acceptance to university is an enormous feat of self motivation and hard work, that many students dream of but very few achieve.
Frank's goal is to continue with a masters after he has his degree in agriculture extension. One of his eventual goals is to start an organization to connect sponsors with students in need living in rural areas, as he was. Rodgers wants to put into practice what he learns so that people in his nation can benefit.
We're looking for one more year of support for Frank and Rodgers. The tuition each semester is $600 per student. Rent and tutoring cost $60 per month ($120 for both). Your help can make a huge difference in the life of these incredibly deserving young men. Everything helps, no matter the size of the contribution.
