This is a story about a Mothers love for her son. This is also a story about the battle that her son fought and ultimately lost after 11 years.
In 2006, my nephew Chris, developed a germ cell cancer. It had taken some years to develop before it was found, and so, by the time we found out he had cancer, he had a large tumor in his abdomen, which required major surgery. He almost died on the operating table and they had to pause a day and then continue the operation the next day, also resulting in the removal of one of his kidneys and part of the functionality of one of his heels of his foot. I flew home to be with my sister for the surgery and saw firsthand, the pain and suffering of dealing with cancer.
He went on to recover to a point from the surgery, but was unable to work anymore, and went on social security disability.
Over the next 11 years, Chris would undergo chemo and radiation and undergo 2 more major surgeries as the tumors returned again and again.
My sister Debbie was there with Chris each step of the way on his journey with cancer. Chris was in his early 40’s, but he couldn’t live on his own, and so lived with Debbie and Bob, his parents. As she did when he was a child, Debbie took care of Chris with the love and dedication that only a mother of a sick child could give. She was his caregiver and devoted her life to taking care of him and of course, her husband.
But, ultimately this also meant that there were huge medical bills from his treatments, and Debbie and Bob did not have much money.
Last Thursday Chris underwent his 3rd tumor surgery, which lasted 15 hours long.
He had issues after the surgery, which he did after the other ones, but was able to become stable. This Wednesday, Chris felt that he was feeling strong enough, and he asked the Doctor if he could go home to continue his recovery. He was a favorite of the Doctor, he never complained, he just accepted each issue as it came and went along with the treatment. So, she sent him home that afternoon.
Wednesday night Chris went home, Debbie got him settled into his room and sat up with him until 2am, ensuring he was comfortable. Yesterday morning, Chris woke her and Bob up, and ultimately succumbed to his cancer.
My heart is broken for my sister and the loss of my nephew, Chris. We are not always dealt a good hand in life, and he is one of the good ones who left us too soon.
I am trying to ease the pain a little by setting up a go fund me page for his funeral costs. My sister does not have money for this and we are trying to help with the costs. Any funds remaining from the funeral costs, (if any), will be used to help cover the huge medical bills remaining.
I am flying home to attend the funeral next week, and would appreciate any assistance that you could give to help with the costs of the funeral.
Thanks for reading this, and please say a prayer for my sister, in her pain of losing her son........
