Last year our dad was diagnosed with end stage renal disease resulting in Kidney failure. Obviously this came to a shock for the whole family since dad was not diabetic, he was not a drinker, or any of the other usual causes. He started dialysis shortly after being diagnosed but unfortunately, he has had some complications with the port they placed in his arm. He has gotten a few blood clots and has been lucky that they have been able to perform the procedures to get rid of them but the Doctor also stated that he wouldn't be able to do many more of those procedures. He is now on the transplant list and is in the process with my sister, Shea, to get all necessary testing done so that she can donate a kidney to him. Obviously, there are a lot of expenses that are accrued throughout this process and even after the transplant surgery. The anti-rejection medications that he will have to take are very expensive! Even after his insurance pays their part, there is a large portion not covered. They will have to make numerous trips to Oklahoma City, before the surgery and afterwards, they will also have to stay at a hotel. There are tests that need to be done shortly after being released from hospital and the doctors would like for them to be within a short distance from the hospital. With the risk of rejection being so high, and the chance of getting an infection, my dad won't be able to have many visitors, if any at all, so they won't be able to stay with any family, therefore they will have to stay at a hotel. No donation is too small! Like the kidney donation coordinator said, anything that we can do to alleviate some of the stress this situation/process brings, we will do it.
