In the fall of 2023, while pregnant with my daughter, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma. It was devastating – not just because of what it meant for me, but because of the uncertainty it cast over her life too.
Our first and most urgent mission was to get her here safely. Although we faced many unknowns, I’m so grateful to say: that mission was accomplished. Today, Ellawyn is a healthy, thriving toddler and my daily source of joy, purpose, and strength.
But now, my energy is focused on my own healing.
Since my diagnosis, I’ve pursued various conventional treatments and sought second opinions. I began immunotherapy, but had to stop due to severe toxicity. For the past year I’ve been on a targeted therapy that has stabilized and shrunk the cancer – which has spread to my brain – but it is not curative, and typically only remains effective for about a year. I don’t currently qualify for any clinical trials, and the remaining conventional treatment options are limited.
As my healing journey evolves, I am drawn to evidence-based approaches that support the body’s innate ability to restore and repair. This July, I wish to attend a weeklong retreat that applies neuroscience in an immersive setting – grounded in research on how mental and emotional states impact physical health. I believe this experience could provide new pathways for healing, and I feel strongly called to be there.
This is where I humbly ask for your help.
The last two years have brought enormous medical bills and financial strain on my family. Unfortunately, we can’t absorb the additional out-of-pocket costs that come with alternative therapies, which are not covered by insurance.
I’m asking for help to fund:
- Registration for the healing retreat
- Travel and accommodations
- Ongoing access to holistic therapies not covered by insurance
My intention is to create space for healing and be present for all the moments still ahead with my family. I want to be here to read books to Ellawyn at bedtime and watch her learn, grow, and discover the world. This has not been an easy path to walk, but I am doing my best to meet it with hope, openness, and courage.
If you’ve read this far: thank you. Whether you feel moved to donate, share this campaign, or simply send positive thoughts, I receive it all with gratitude.
Hope and Love,
Katie
