Trinity is a 14 yr old girl with Spina Bifida. Her family are very dear friends of ours. In Aug 2014, Trinity had titanium spinal rods attached to her vertebrae to help correct scoliosis, but last month she began complaining of severe back pain.
On March 5th, her mom, Donna Mahaney, took her to Kaiser Urgent care in Bakersfield. She had an X-ray and the doctor who reviewed them said it all looked fine. They sent her home, still in extreme pain and without pain meds or any concern. Her mom spent the next 4 days trying to get ahold of the doctors only to finally get a call from another doctor that saw the radiology report and said that they were indeed broken.
The orthopedics department at Los Angeles Kaiser hospital said they couldn't get her in to be seen until the 14th (almost another week later). They did new x-rays that clearly showed a horrific break on both of her rods. The orthopedic doctor said he'd make her a brace and get her in for surgery after April 1st. He said the nurses were planning a strike and he had vacation plans with family.
Her family was in shock! They had been trying to get help for Trinity, who is in extreme pain every day, since the beginning of March and now she was going to have to wait even longer? Every doctor her family has talked to has said this is an emergency situation. Those broken rods could puncture anything with the wrong move.
It's been a horrific down hill train wreck from the start. If they could have seen that break on March 5th she would be healing by now instead of still looking at 22 more days until the healing can begin.
Emotionally and physically Trinity is broken. She is limited on most of her movements as well as self care. She is completely reliant on family for help to do anything. She has always strived to be a very independent wheelchair user... and I can say her self esteem and dignity is shot.
Fortunately, after contacting the news and an attorney, her family received word that she will have her surgery on Tues March 22! Now a new challenge begins. Trinity's family owns Seanco Custom Wheelchairs - building custom sports wheelchairs for adaptive athletes. Her dad, Sean Mahaney, is self employed. Her mom, a FedEx employee, is out of paid leave. She will be living at the hospital for a week with Trinity. It's over 100 miles away from their home. There will be travel expenses, food expenses, and lost wages that they will need help with.
The medical system may be failing Trinity, but together we can help this family who has done SO much to help the disabled community!
Please donate if you can! Every dollar helps! Please spread the word and together we can provide HOPE FOR TRINITY!
