Last week, Hurricane Milton struck the west coast of Florida. Thankfully, it downgraded from a category 5 to a category 3, but the intense winds and storm surge were still dangerous. We faced a mandatory evacuation and prepared our home by installing hurricane shutters and sandbags. However, when we returned on Thursday, we found our living room, dining room, main bathroom, hallway, and Camila’s bedroom covered in water, with no power and cracks in the ceiling.
We were without power for 3½ days, and upon inspection, we learned that our home has sustained significant damage to the rooms, roof, and ceiling. There is major water damage within the walls and flooring, affecting every room, the garage, and the porch. A musty smell has developed in both Ariana and Camila’s bedrooms and the garage. We were informed that our home is currently unlivable due to the extent of the damage and the potential for mold growth.
We have lost furniture from our living room, dining room, and the girls’ rooms. To ensure our family’s safety and health, we are temporarily staying with family near Ariana’s school, but we must soon find alternative accommodations as our dog, Loki, is not allowed in their apartment complex. We are hoping our insurance will help cover a hotel or Airbnb stay and find a place for Loki during this difficult time. However, we are uncertain about the coverage and when demolition and repairs will begin. We understand that many are still repairing their homes from Hurricane Helene, which may delay our situation.
Carlos and I have discussed the financial impact of this emergency, especially with the holiday season approaching. While we pride ourselves on being self-sufficient and helping others, we now find ourselves in need and are reaching out for support to provide our girls with a safe home. Friends and family know that we are always there for others in need.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Our GoFundMe will help cover our deductible, repairs that insurance may not fully cover, temporary housing, and flooring for Ariana (10 years old) and Camila (4 years old).
We recognize that many have lost everything due to these hurricanes, and we are truly grateful to still have a home, even with the damage. This situation has been particularly challenging for Ariana and Camila, who are stressed about being away from home and unable to play in their familiar surroundings.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for any support you can provide. May God bless each and every one of you!
