It Takes A Village...

Note: Unfortunately, our situation is very time-sensitive, as the treatment program has limited openings. Furthermore, our family was blessed with an opportunity to return to Ecuador for 5 weeks, leaving June 24th. Although we are devastated that we will not be able to experience this trip all together, we hope to avoid canceling the trip because it would create an even greater amount of stress and disappointment for the rest of the family that is eagerly anticipating it.

Frederick Douglass once said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Although we know that Douglass’ words are wise, right now, nothing about life feels easy.

The need to write this email and reach out to our support network for help is both humbling and heartbreaking. When we started the adoption process over 6 years ago, we truly had no idea the challenges we would face.  As I recently read about the way a pearl is formed, the Lord reminded me that the heartbreaks, injuries, or wounds we face are often the start of something beautiful and are an impetus toward sanctification. Although it is hard to see that right now, we are holding strong in our faith that the Lord will not just restore our family, but will use this hardship to create something new and precious, just like he does with a pearl.

Borrowing some words from Jesus in John 16:25, “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly….”

One of our children is struggling, and although we have done hard work in trying to help him work through the pain of his past and develop healthy relationships, recent revelations have moved us from worried parents into parents who were forced to take immediate action to ensure the safety of our entire family. We understand that this may come as a shock to many people, as our children appear to be “coping well,” developmentally on target, or securely attached. It is true that we have all made huge strides. However, sometimes what seems to be “normal” or even high functioning is actually a survival mechanism to hide painful trauma and is actually detrimental in the healing process.

After this recent crisis, we sought counsel and recommendations from loved ones who know and understand our situation well. It was agreed upon that an intensive therapy program is the best option for our family at this time. We have spent countless hours researching programs all over the nation who can meet our child’s complex needs, and we feel strongly about the spiritual integrity and quality of care at the treatment center we would like to pursue. Unfortunately, the cost of the program is more than overwhelming and unachievable without our village.

Please know that we are pulling all of our resources together and seeking out all avenues of funding. Not only are we withdrawing a sizeable amount from our savings accounts, we have contacted our insurance company and although there is no guarantee of coverage, it sounds promising to receive partial reimbursement. We also applied for two grants that were specifically created to assist families in need of costly intensive therapy. The potential grants and insurance reimbursement, combined with our own investment as well as the pledged investment of some family members, will hopefully bring the remaining cost closer to $30,000.

We never imagined we would be seeking your help in this way, but during this time God has helped us to see just how great our support system is, and we understand how incredibly blessed we are to have you in our lives. Thank you for allowing us to be vulnerable and real with you. We so appreciate any financial support you can offer, but more than anything we thank you in advance for your continued prayers during this extremely difficult time.
