WHAT HAPPENED:
Hi, my name is Jessica Wright. My husband's name is Richard Wright. Aug 31, 2023, My husband, daughter and I stopped to grab something to eat. As we pulled to the side, we saw a man with 4 children. They were having some car issues. It was late, around 9pm. The car was elevated up on a jack with the brakes and rotors exposed. We wanted to offer some assistance to lighten their burden. Being it was late, our daughter and I stayed behind in the truck. The vehicle my husband was helping was behind us across the parking lot. Around 20mins later my husband appeared on the passenger said of the car. "Babe we're almost done. I'm getting ready to wrap things up." He smiled and walked back over. About 2-3 minutes later I heard a sound like a crowd was gathering. When I looked in my rear-view mirror, I saw seven people lifting up the car, and what looked like my husband underneath.
My husband had been crushed by the vehicle and had managed to pull himself from under as they lifted the vehicle off of him. As he fought for his life his lungs collapsed on him. Blood had poured from his head, ears, nose and eyes covered the ground quickly. The ambulance arrived just as he gave up the fight.
INJURIES AND MEDICAL INFORMATION:
He was rushed to Grant medical hospital. Once I arrived, I waited hours in the CCU to know if he was alive or not. Family members and I gathered in a room as the doctor came in to talk to us. They explained that he was none responsive and there was no sign of consciousness since the ambulance arrived to this point. His injuries we severe. There was a large amount of air bubbles in his brain due to the pressure of the car smashing down on his head. He suffered from many fractures in his head and face. There was bleeding on the brain. He had lost lots of blood and had to receive a blood transfusion. They did laparoscopic surgery to open up his intestine to check for damage or internal bleeding. They explained that he was not breathing on his own, and that his lungs had collapsed, with bruising to his lungs and rib fractures. They had to inflate them with bilateral tubes. In other words, there wasn't much more that they could do for him. I explained to them he was a good man he was only trying to help someone when this occurred, and I asked them to do whatever they could to save him. They came back with hope an hour later. I don't know what changed their minds, but God himself must have worked upon their minds. They agreed to do immediate brain surgery to release the pressure and to remove the bleeding on the outter part of the brain. Once in surgery they realized there was bleeding on the brain but also inside. They were able to also place a metal plate in the left temporal lobe that was crushed on impact. They removed left skull flap which was damage from impact.
In the hospital at his side for days there were no real signs of brain activity for a few days there were hand movements a little here and there. The eye light exam showed dialation with slow response on the right side, and responsiveness to pain test. The movements begin to become direct and purposeful movements. After neurology gave to okay for respiratory therapy he was sent into transition off the ventilator over to C-pap; and to address his bilateral tubes in his lungs from the collapse. ENT specialist were sent in to address the multiple fracture to his face. Blood and drainage from the brain and internal face bleeding had opened a way through the ear drum to release collection of fluids causing some temporary hearing loss on one side, and on the left side there was a break in the bone which allows one to hear. He has gained some hearing back but some hearing due to the broken bone will be permanently lost. His nose was broken during the crush in which ENT is following care for also. Speech therapy, Physical therapy, and Occupational Therapy were to help in while inpatient, and continue in out-patient ST and OT. Neuro ophthalmology to address the double vision and damage to cranial nerve 6 palsy, and Right eye limited range and movement, as well as other eye issues that resulted from the incident. Plastic Surgery operated on him soon before leaving the hospital. He suffered from fractures to the mandible and maxilla. The operation was to place hardware in the jaw to realign the jaw and wire it shut to heal. Richard had many drains placed throughout the body to major organs about 7 to be exact, and many areas where sutures/ staples were placed. This was a reason for nurse home visits to be arranged for wound care and many other battle he is facing still trying to recover. He has 6-9 appointments a week in which co-payments of $122-$208 is due at the time of service. Richard was the provider for our family, and with him not able to work the financial burdens are left to me. Richard is an incredible person with a large heart, and big faith in the LORD. He deserves to get the treatments needed to recover. Please, if you feel it on your heart to help by donating your sacrifice would be greatly appreciated. Richard has a long road to recovery with other operations, surgeries, and therapies, without your financial contributions treatment will be hard. His journey is nothing short of a miracle. I am truly thankful to the Lord for his sure hand in Richard's life, and we are also thankful for people like you.
