When we rescue a pet, we often don’t know their past, where they came from, or the challenges they may have faced. Sadie Mae and Ella are no exception.

What made their journeys different was the care and support they received, which was only made possible by the support from people like you. Read their stories below.
Sadie Mae

At only 5 months old, Sadie Mae was surrendered to a shelter in southwestern Virginia with a broken pelvis.

City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue stepped in and brought her to a foster home in Washington, DC, where she was sent for follow-up on her injuries.

When CDCK took Sadie Mae to the orthopedic veterinary specialist, the extent of her injuries was revealed. Not only was her pelvis broken, but both her hips were dislocated, and a vertebra in her spine was crushed, injuries most likely inflicted by her previous owner.

As shocking as it is that Sadie Mae is still walking and in little to no pain, what's more astonishing is that, looking at Sadie Mae, you'd never know she suffered such horrible abuse. This sweet girl still loves all people and is eager to meet anyone new.

Now closely monitored by the orthopedic specialist, her injuries are healing, and she is as playful and mischievous as any puppy should be. She was even lucky enough to win over her fosters' hearts, giving them no choice but to make her part of their family!

Ella

Ella is a 10-month-old Chihuahua mix from a partner shelter in Maryland facing chronic overcrowding.

The shelter noticed she had a limp, and City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue stepped in to ensure she could see the necessary specialists.

Originally, it was believed she would need her leg amputated, but after the vet reviewed her X-rays, we got better news. It was determined that Ella has Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, a fairly common ailment in her breed that causes the femur and hip joint to deteriorate.

After a thorough checkup in which Ella showed a mild case and no signs of pain, she was cleared to get back to her puppy life! Ella is still anxiously awaiting her forever family, and won't let a slight limp get in her way!
