Under normal circumstances, we never would request help of this nature. However, normal circumstances are something we haven't seen for a while.
My husband, Nathan was being seen by a gastroenterologist for some issues he was having. It was decided a colonoscopy was needed to examine the colon and make sure there were no problems. That colonoscopy changed his life and our family's lives forever.
It was discovered that Nathan has over 100 pre-cancerous polyps located in his large intestine and rectum. While testing is still being done, it is highly suspected that he has a genetic condition known as Familial Adenomatous Polyposis. This condition causes his body to create high numbers of polyps, and probably began doing so during his teenage years. People with this diagnosis, will, if untreated, 100% of the time contract colorectal cancer. This will usually occur by the age of 40.
After discussions with his gastroenterologist he was referred to a surgeon up in Salt Lake City so that he could have his colon completely removed. This is because there is no way to control the polyps when there are so many of them in the colon.
Nathan went in for surgery on March 10th, and is currently recovering. But the ordeal is not over yet. Familial Andenomatous Polyposis is usually contracted because one of the parents has it. This means that DNA testing is also needed for Nathan to identify the gene mutation. If it's found, then our two children, ages 5 and 2 will also need genetic testing done because there's a 50% chance they have this as well. This increases the financial burden we are faced with.
As a result of this, our savings is being decimated, and we now have a mountain of medical bills to pay off that we otherwise did not expect to be dealing with. Our insurance family out of pocket maximum is $5000. Unfortunately, we simply do not have enough to pay the medical expenses along with our other needs such as our mortgage and car payment. With few other options available, we are turning to you, our friends, in hopes that you might be able and willing to help us in our time of need.
