Annie's NYU Kodály Music Tuition

Donation protected
Dear Family, Friends, and Friends of Friends,

My name is Annie Lee Moffett.  I am a multidisciplinary artist and music educator.  Based in NYC, I work in many different mediums.  As an educator, I was appointed to the faculty of Third Street Music School in 2008.  Teaching music has been a calling that I am so grateful to have answered. It has been and continues to be one of the most beautiful, purposeful, and thrilling experiences of my life.

Most of my teaching practice has been rooted in the Orff approach.  This approach has been a magical journey of discovery and realization.  Developed by Karl Orff and Gunild Keetman, Orff combines music, movement, drama, and speech into lessons that connect to the heart of how children learn: through play.

Another equally brilliant and transformative approach to music learning is the Kodaly Method.  Developed by Zoltan Kodaly, it uses rhythm sequencing and notation, moveable – do solfege, melodic sequencing and pentatony, as well as Curwen hand signs (a technique that demonstrates tonal function).  Studies show that the Kodaly method improves intonation, rhythm skills, music literacy, and the ability to sing in increasingly complex parts.  Outside of music, it has been shown to improve perceptual functioning, concept formation, motor skills, and performance in other areas such as math and reading.

Two summers ago, I began (with the help of many of you) to study the Kodaly Method and work toward my certification in the method at the Kodaly Summer Institute at New York University. The full certification requires completion of three levels. I completed Level 1 in 2016, Level 2 in 2017, and recently I was accepted into Level 3. I hope to return to NYU this summer and attain my full certification in Kodaly.

Since I first became aware of Kodaly while a student at Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music (B.A. African American Studies, B. Mus Voice) it has been a dream of mine to study it and incorporate it into my teaching. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to attain full certification in this method.

It feels good to be on the home stretch!  This three week intensive program is a total immersion into the Kodaly pedagogy.  It is my hope to complete this certification and continue synergizing this method with what I have already been practicing. I know this will lead to a more enriching, more transformative, and more magical experience for the hundreds of children that I teach.

The funds raised through the go fund me campaign will be used to pay the tuition for this program. The tuition this year has been raised to $1,800. I need to raise $1,800 by June 30th.

I understand if you cannot give. Please consider circulating though. There may be someone out there who is passionate about music education that can.

Thank you for your time and support.

Much Love,

Annie Lee Moffett
