You’ve done everything right. Held it together through the hard stuff. Shown up. Pushed through. Tried to stay positive. And just when you think things might be easing up… life knocks the wind out of you.

That’s where my mom is right now. And while she’s one of the strongest people I know, even the strongest need a hand sometimes.

Over the past two years, she’s had three major surgeries. Each one brought physical pain, long recoveries, time out of work, and financial setbacks. Through it all, she’s kept going—working a physically demanding job as a nail tech and providing for herself and my younger brother as the sole income earner.

Her most recent surgery was on March 18, and she took three weeks off to recover. She had just started easing back into work when she started feeling off on Easter Sunday. By Monday, she had a high fever. Urgent care sent her to the ER, where she was promptly admitted. She was septic. A CT scan revealed a 4” x 7” abscess. Her fever continued to rise and her blood pressure dropped dangerously low. Emergency surgery followed - this being her 4th surgery. She spent days on IV antibiotics to stabilize her body.

She’s stable now, and improving, but her recovery will be long and intense. She’ll need 3–6 weeks of daily IV antibiotics via a PICC line, either through home care. Medication will continue orally for months after. Physical therapy and continued monitoring will be essential to prevent a recurrence—something that could be even more devastating.

That means more time out of work and although she has health insurance, the out-of-pocket costs for medication and treatments are significant, on top of the loss of income. Her reserves have been depleted.
