Day One Home visitor Brenda Forsythe and nurse Sue Lovelace ask for your support of Day One Alcona County.
Since 1958, Child and Family Services of Northeast Michigan has been providing direct services to families in 11 Northeast Michigan counties. One of these services is the Day One program in Alcona County. Day One is modeled on the Healthy Families America. Healthy Families America has been the subject of at least 40 evaluation studies in 22 states in order to determine the positive effects of the program. Reviews of the studies show benefits including reduced child maltreatment, increased use of prenatal care, healthier children at birth, increased school readiness, increased parent-child interaction and increased access to and use of primary health care. Together, these factors combine to help further the great childhoods that all children deserve, because children are our future.
Day One Program Alcona County
1. Promotes health & development for moms in 3rd trimester of pregnancy & infants up to one year for enrollment.
2. Promotes health & child development for children ages 0-3
3. Provides parenting education & support
4. Offers connections & coordination with other community resources
Day One is a voluntary program that provides in-home support services to at-risk parents who are willing to receive help in getting their children off to a healthy start. Risk factors include: being a single parent, living in an impoverished rural area, unemployment, limited transportation, financial difficulties, and a weak support system. The Day One program is considered a prevention program intended to promote preservation of the family unit. Eligible families can be enrolled in Day One during the prenatal phase or before the infant turns two months old. Families can remain in the program until the child turns age three years old. The program is designed to build a trusting, working relationship with the parent(s). Families are assessed for family strengths as well as needs. When needs are identified, referrals are made to services that can address those needs. The Day One team is comprised of a Family Support Worker and a nurse, both of whom assist the family by teaching coping skills, problem solving skills, positive parent-child interaction, as well as healthy childhood growth and development. These interventions help prevent childhood neglect and abuse, as well as other poor childhood outcomes.
Each enrolled family receives home visits from an experienced Family Support Worker who is trained
in child health & development and parenting support and a monthly visit from the nurse.  Home visits consist of discussion and activities concerned with each child’s health and development, parenting support, and connections with other community resources. This specifically includes use of a comprehensive collection of early-childhood learning, parenting principles, and effective discipline education materials, use of developmental screening and measurement tools such as “Ages & Stages Questionnaires”, coordination with other health department services such as WIC, MIHP, immunization, and well-child clinics, optional coordination, referrals, and advocacy for other community resources and programs.
Day One is free and has no income requirements.
Day One staff get to know the emotional, financial and physical concerns of family members and help clients address those concerns by using staff expertise and referral sources. A child is at greatest risk of abuse/neglect the first three years of life.
The absence of referrals to Child Protective Services can be considered a valid indication that the presence of staff from the Day One Program in the home of at-risk children is effective.
The funding for this program was not renewed by the Kellogg foundation, so we are seeking funding to ensure that this program does not close. Please help Keep Day One in Alcona County, Michigan.
