This past spring, our beloved Daniel learned that he had a brain tumor at the base of his skull (specifically, a trigeminal schwannoma). It seems he may have had this tumor since he was a small child, but, sadly, it went undetected until it had grown unusually large.

On June 30, Daniel underwent surgery to have the tumor removed, believing he would be able to return home within a few days. However, there were significant complications during his initial surgery, which caused Daniel to stay in the hospital throughout the summer, mostly in critical care. He has faced complication after complication, and multiple surgeries and procedures. At the end of August, Daniel was finally admitted into a skilled nursing facility, where he is receiving physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.

At the moment, Daniel is gradually regaining movement on his left side, but he has lost control of the right side of his body, which may or may not return. He is slowly re-learning how to swallow safely and to say a few words. Despite how much pain he is in, he has a strong will to recover. And, through all of this, he has maintained his warmth and sense of humor.

This GoFundMe is set up to help Daniel and his family during these toughest of times. Though it is unclear how much Daniel will need in the long term, we can begin to address his most immediate needs. Your donation will go directly towards:

  • Enabling Daniel’s family to be there: Daniel’s parents are his strongest advocates and a crucial part of his rehabilitation. His parents need to take significant time away from work to be present for his care and therapy sessions. Your support will help offset lost wages as well as their daily 2.5-hour commute to and from Daniel’s care facility, ensuring they can be by his side.
  • Specialized care and equipment: In the long term, Daniel will require ongoing intensive therapy and specialized medical equipment that may not be fully covered by his insurance. Your contributions will help provide him with the tools he needs to continue his fight to recover.
  • Future care and home modifications: It is possible that Daniel will need lifelong support and his family's home may need to be modified to accommodate his physical needs.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference in Daniel’s recovery during this critical period. If you can’t donate, you can still help by sharing this story with your friends and family. If you know Daniel, then you know he is someone who always shows up for his friends and family. This is our opportunity to show up for him.

If you have any questions or would like to learn how else you can help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Reach out to one of the organizers.
