David Recovers With Prayers
#DavidRecoversWithPrayers
On Monday morning, November 16th, David Skinner’s immediate family was contacted and notified that he was in the hospital and on full life support after suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. David is a healthy 37 year old gregarious, life-loving, runner, surfer, Kawasaki enthusiast, and loved cousin, friend, son, brother, nephew, grandson and co-worker.
David had not been feeling well that morning and asked his roommate to take him to Emergency. On their drive to the hospital David went into Cardiac Arrest. His roommate immediately called for an ambulance and David received CPR the entire way to the hospital. David’s parents, Gregg and Kathy and his Sister Rachelle immediately made the trip from Sacramento to San Diego to be by his side. During the first several days they were regularly informed that only 10% of people in his position survive and of those, most wake up in the first 48 hours. After a week in the hospital with David not waking up, he started defying many of the odds that were stacked against him. Results began to show his organs healing and they started to function on their own. Brain scans showed function in the back (responsible for organs) and middle (responsible for pain and emotion). David is fighting! But he still hasn’t woken up. Scans can’t tell us about the functioning of the front part of the brain (responsible for thought, decision making, etc.) and we are all anxiously awaiting for him to wake and take the next steps in his recovery process. As of today, he is off of the ECMO life support (and many other life sustaining machines) but still on a ventilator which he is fighting against, as is normal due to the discomfort of this machine. Currently we are praying for his fever to break and his lungs to clear and for him to work with that ventilator. Above all, we need for him to wake up which will improve his ability to heal.
Gregg and Kathy are incredibly thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers. They are especially grateful for his exceptionally talented medical team. Many of you have reached out asking how you can help and Gregg and Kathy’s response is always an expression of extreme gratitude for keeping David in thoughts and prayers; “please continue praying for his body to heal and an opportunity for a full recovery.” Understandably, that is literally all that matters and all they ask for.
Currently we don’t know what’s ahead for them day to day, week to week or even months from now. But at some point, the tough decisions will need to be made to ensure someone can stay in town with David. In the last two weeks we have 3 households that were put on pause from a financial perspective (Gregg and Kathy’s, Rachelle’s and David’s). We know David needs to stay where he is for the time being and that Gregg, Kathy and Rachelle will most likely have to use FMLA and develop a rotation schedule. San Diego is David’s paradise. It is everyone’s desire to secure his home for him and potentially this can be used by the family during the scheduled rotation. If not, hotel expenses will most likely take its place (the hotel is 2 miles from the hospital while David’s home is 20 min, understandably it’s important for them to be as close as possible right now). The financial responsibilities are not fully known at this time, and will adjust as needed. Gregg and Kathy can’t say it enough… David just needs your continued prayers. While we help them stay focused on what’s important (David’s health and recovery), we want to offer an easy way for those of you who’ve asked to help financially with a platform to do so. This will be a long road for David and his family and we are thankful for you keeping David in your hearts and continued prayers for his full recovery.
“Pooh, how do you spell love? You don’t spell love Piglet. You feel it.”
We love you David!!!
