Roy's Road to Recovery
Donation protected
We are raising money on behalf of our nephew Roy to cover his rehabilitation. Roy is a 24-year-old man who was recently in a car accident where he suffered severe brain and spinal injuries. Here is his story:
On May 20, 2022 Roy was a restrained passenger when the driver hit a telephone pole so hard it cracked in half and the car flipped several times. He was unresponsive at the scene and airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. The driver did not carry liability insurance and since Roy does not driver, he does not have personal injury protection. Because of this our sister has healthcare insurance “Aetna” has been covering most of his expensive.
Roy’s injuries are as follows: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Scapula fracture (shoulder blade fracture), and fractures in his neck. As I am sure you can imagine he is in a lot of pain. In addition, he is now paralyzed from the chest down with some functions in his arms.
Tampa General expressed how important it was to begin rehabilitation is important due to loss of muscle strength, prevent joint contractures and conservation of bone density, ensure normal functioning of respiratory and what they call a bowel and bladder program. In addition, he needs Occupation Therapy to help with normal daily routines, physical therapy to help with motor function, muscle mass, memory, and moving his body from the bed and vice versa.
Aetna approved for him to be transferred to a rehabilitation in Jacksonville for 3 – 4 weeks depending on his progress but did not pay for the ambulance ride. However, they are now saying they will only approve 1 week of rehabilitation. Our sister is working on a 2nd appeal but is not getting much cooperation from Aetna.
Roy really needs to stay in rehabilitation longer so we are asking for your prayers and any financial help you can provide.
