Saving Luna

Hi, my name is Vanessa Schoon. It all started with my current Pomeranian Lainey having anxiety and getting stress colitis when I decided she needed a sister to always have around. That’s when I found Luna ❤️ I grew very attached to Luna over the two months of waiting for her to come home. The Friday of the weekend I was supposed to get her my heart dropped when the breeder had called me and asked me to call her as soon as I can. During Luna’s last check up a heart murmur was found and I was given the choice of proceeding with her or waiting for another litter. After lots of talks with family and friends, then an extensive talk with my vet I decided I had to get her. Luna needed a mom and a good life for whatever life she was going to have.
On Sunday, March 5th my 29th birthday… I went to get the sweet baby Luna ❤️ even though I already loved her as soon as I saw her I loved her even more and knew I was going to do anything for her.

Lainey fell in love immediately too!

Luna is beyond playful, sweet, and very outgoing. There was no warm up time for this little girl it was like she was meant to be apart of our family immediately.
On Monday morning, we arrived at our 9 am vet appointment at the Animal Health Center of Leawood to find out what was actually going on with baby Luna. My heart then broke again when I was told she had a grade 5 heart murmur and Dr. Wilcox was concerned she had PDA and needed to see a cardiologist as soon as possible. Usually the cardiologist is booking out a few weeks or months in advance, but by luck there was an opening at 12:30 that day and we took it. We went to BluePearl here in Overland Park and Dr. Thomason performed an echocardiogram where it was confirmed Luna indeed have PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) heart defect that occurs when the ductus arteriosus fails to close down at birth.
I instantly panicked, but was ensured that Luna just needs this surgery to perform a surgical closure, which would result in her living a completely normal life.
It was recommended she have the surgery between age 18-20 weeks with another echocardiogram 3 months post-op.
The estimated surgery cost was $5k-$6500. The initial echocardiogram was close to $1k, which she will need another post op.

There has never been a doubt in my mind that I need to save this little girl. I just need some help ❤️

Luna receives her regular care at the
Animal Health Center of Leawood in Leawood, KS
Her cardiologist is at and surgery will be at Blue Pearl here in Overland Park.

I have to say I’ve always been impressed with the staff and vets at Animal Health Center of Leawood and Dr Thomas at Blue Pearl has been amazing as well! ❤️
