My name is Alicia Bradbeer and on Feb. 6th my world changed. I was out feeding my chickens and tripped over the threshold into the coup and took a dive to the ground. I fell face down in the rock and chicken poop. I woke up in the emergency room, where they told me I would be transferred to another Hospital where they could have a surgeon that could operate on me. I had injured my spinal cord severely. After the surgery I found that I could not move my left side and my right side had some injury in the hand and arm. I was devastated. They rushed me by ambulance to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center to their acute spinal cord injury rehabilitation unit. I could not walk, go to the bathroom, change my clothes. I could do nothing. They had to put me in a sling to hoist me up to get me out of bed. I layed in bed and cried for days.
Then something happened. I decided I could lay there and wallo in self pity or I could pray to God to help me get better, Every morning I woke up and thanked God I was alive. Everyday I set small goals, like I am going to move this finger today etc.
I met patients and staff there that truly have changed my life. The staff there was incredible. They were so encouraging. I met patients there that made me feel how lucky I was because with my injury I had hope for recovery. When I left on March 9th I was still in a wheelchair but I was walking short distances in my walker. I am so grateful that my progress has continued, I am getting stronger everday.
I am trying to raise money so I can pay my monthly and medical bills. I do not want to loose my home. I have applied for every aid you can, but it takes so much time to get any type of help. I try not to worry, I know God will see me through. I am concentrating on my recovery and know all the pieces will fall together.
I needed the funds yesterday. I have never done anything like this before but a friend told me why not try it.
I am excited about my new path and will be happy with whatever recovery that God sees fit. I am looking forward to making a difference with people with spinal cord injury. I will be very thankful to whatever help people can give to me financially. I know that my life has changed for a reason and I plan on making a difference.
Thanks and God Bless!
