On March 31, 2015, a family was suddenly awakened to the screams of Ashley, 20, yelling; "GET OUT OF THE HOUSE...IT'S ON FIRE!!!!" Ashley had just secured her 4 year old boy in her arms before she scrambled throughout the house, pounding on and opening doors to awake Johnny, 23, Alexandra, 20 and her 12 yr. old poodle Isabelle, and their friend Jared, 23. Coincidentally, they had night shifts the previous night and all of them were in a deep state of sleep. Ashley had just noticed flames raging outside her second story bedroom window as the smoke began to billow into their home. Johnny was in bed recovering from a 15 ft. fall down a set of concrete stairs. His accident occurred two days prior to this fire. Johnny shattered his arm and had nine stitches embedded into his forehead. I am writing this on friday from the hospital awaiting his emergence from surgery. These kids all work for a Salt Lake City based company called TKJ, which cares for special needs adults. Their program hires young, kind and smart people to give their special needs "clients" as much of a normal life as possible. This includes cooking meals for them, taking care of all of their personal needs, and driving them wherever they need to go. They all love their jobs, but they are all payed a very modest income with no benefits. In addition to their social work, they occasionally shelter other people into their home.
I'm so concerned about the medical costs that Johnny will incur from his surgery and rehabilitation. They've all struggled to make ends meet prior to this house fire. The fire has displaced them, and none of them have renters insurance. They lost all of their furniture, and what few personal belongings they own. The four of them ran out of the house in pajamas and with no shoes on their feet. Johnny will not be recovering in his own home and will be out of work for several weeks, not to mention his inability to drive for quite a while. I am just looking to give these amazingly good hearted and loving kids a fresh start and get their lives back on track again. Whatever you graciously donate will be helping out all four of them. I sincerely appreciate it.
