The Koonce Family

We are truly heartbroken at the devastating loss of Cobi. I honestly have no words, as this still doesn’t feel real. Nobody plans forthis, especially as graduation is approaching, a time of celebration. But now their family is in the truly unthinkable position to plan for a funeral.

if you can please consider donating to help with expenses at this time of need it would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Gunter Tiger Family,

Gunter High School has suffered a tremendous loss, as a student has passed away, leaving a hole in our hearts. The family of Cobi Koonce informed us he passed overnight. Cobi was a senior who, as his friends described, was the “best” best friend. They said Cobi made every time a “better time” and was a great big brother to his siblings. Cobi passed away from suicide, leaving behind a family that will forever miss him as well as friends and classmates who loved him dearly.

For any student who needs support during this difficult time, we will have counselors available throughout the day, whether they need assistance processing these events or simply need someone to talk to. If your child is struggling with this loss and would prefer not to speak to a counselor at school, please talk with them so they can receive the loving support they need right now.

The family gave us permission to share specific details about this tragedy, as they never want another family to go through this. We all struggle at different times in our own ways, and students are included in that – sometimes more than we know. If your child is struggling with their mental wellness, our schools are a safe place for them to express their struggles. Counselors are always available to have these important discussions, so please make sure your child is aware this resource is available to them. We encourage families to keep a close eye on their children in the wake of this news. If your child exhibits atypical behavior, talk to them or encourage them to talk to our counselors.

Mrs. Woods and Mr. Waggoner met with the senior class earlier this morning. They only shared that Cobi passed as we did not have permission to share additional details at that time. There was not a formal announcement to any other student group. If you would like to set up an appointment for your student or your family to visit with Mr. Waggoner, please fill out this Google Form.

For more resources on suicide prevention, please visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at www.afsp.org or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text HELLO to 741741 to text with a crisis counselor (www.crisistextline.org/how-it-works).

We love all of our students, and our thoughts and prayers are always for the safety and wellbeing of every child in our community. In this trying time, know that we are here for your child if they need assistance.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jill Siler, Gunter ISD Superintendent
