Shirley Davis, Ms. Davis, Momma Davis- my mother went by many names and fulfilled many roles. When I think of her the first word I can think of is love. Ms. Davis was love: she loved her community, her people, her family, she loved her students, her coworkers, she loved her garden, she even loved and took care of animals that other people had abandoned in the streets. That’s just who she was, a person who loved hard and fought fiercely for what she believed in. She was gentle, supportive, and encouraging and she was also funny, passionate, and always kept it real - “Y’all don’t wanna see Compton Ms. Davis!” As she would always say.
By the time of her passing, she had undoubtedly touched the lives of over hundreds of people; I don’t know too many people that have ever met her that don’t have a story where she gave them a piece of encouragement, put herself on the line for them, brightened their day, or helped them achieve their goals. She was there for people who thought they had no one just to prove that we all have somebody. And though her physical being has moved on from this earth, her legacy and her spirit live on in the countless lives she touched and poured her love into.
At this time, I am arranging my mother’s funeral and my goal is to give her a proper, beautiful funeral to memorialize the life she lead within her time here. Please if you have it within your heart, donate anything you can so I can make this happen.
