Hi! My name is Martha Wilson-Escobedo, I am the daughter to Mark and Lucia Wilson. I am starting this account to help my mom with my dads needs. Thank you for looking at our story and if you contribute our family will greatly appreciate it. Our story will say it all.
The saying that life changes within an instant hits home with our family because it is so true. Please love, enjoy and make memories with your loved ones before life changes.
Almost 10 years ago this September my dad, Mark Wilson, was in a really bad motorcycle accident coming home from a Harley Run in Las Vegas, Nevada. The accident unfortunately left him with a severe brain injury needing him to be hospitalized with 24 hour care. When the accident occurred my mom, Lucia Wilson, saw the whole accident happen right in front of her. She saw the love of her life almost lose his life.
When the accident first happened we didn't know how or what was going to happen to my dad because he was in such bad condition. However, he is still fighting making minor steps at times. My mom has shown the true meaning of love. Which they have been married over 30 years, still going strong. This accident has changed our life's and family forever, sadly to say the worst situation that has happened to our family.
My dad was the most caring, loving, patient, giving, helpful man. He was the center to our family, the person that neutralized everything between everyone. He was my best friend, my hero, my supporter. So when the accident happened, it was a heart break to everyone. Even though he is still with us I still miss that bond that we had. Before the accident Mark was a loving husband, father, and grandpa to his 4 grandsons. Living everyday to the fullest, especially with his loved ones. Making a lot of memories for everyone to look back on.
When he first got into the accident he was initially at Northridge Medical Center for six weeks. Which at that time I took a medical leave of absence from work to be with mom to help with the medical information and to comfort her during this time. My sister took a leave of absence at her work too so she could help my moms with her daycare. The doctors then told us he’d need to be transferred to a long term facility since he wasn’t making any major progress. Since we are from Lompoc, California, luckily Santa Barbara had a facility he needed. Which was so great because it wasn’t too far from home, less than an hour away. So my dad then transferred to Goleta Valley Cottage Sub Acute Facility, which would basically be his home until he made significant changes. So since then my mom has been driving to see him almost everyday. She doesn’t like to miss any days if she could but she is still trying to make a living to pay for monthly household expenses as well as my dad’s out of pocket medical expenses.
When most people hear about my dad they are fairly shocked by his story, shocked by hearing how alert he can be at times with the type of injury he has. When my mom is around he is most alert and shows the most response with her. She can ask him if he want’s a kiss and he puckers for her. On a really good day he will slowly track you when you are talking or walking around him. The neurologist has said the he see’s more response when family is around.
Then last year my mom was given notice that the Sub Acute facility would be closing and that all the patients will be transferred to Saint John’s in Camarillo, California by June 2015. Which really upset my mom since originally Cottage Hospital said the Sub Acute patients would have a spot in the new reconstructed hospital but located in downtown Santa Barbara. Also, she was upset since that would be too far of a drive for her to try and do everyday like she already has been doing for the last 10 years.
After a lot of run around, phone calls, and information my mom has decided to try and bring my dad home so he could be closer to his loved ones and so my mom could be less in the car and do more with her husband near her at home. However, before he comes home she needs to reconstruct her master bathroom into handicap accessible and the master bedroom needs french doors inserted so his equipment can make it into the room and easier for her to take him in and out of the house. Reconstruction is ranging from about $10,000-$15,000. We are trying to raise as much as possible to help her with this project so she can bring Mark home.
Thank you for your time! I know whatever help and support you give my family will be appreciated.
