Is it really possible to learn creativity? We here in the Monadnock Regional High School Destination Imagination program think we can. Every year teams of up to seven students join together to take on one of the five different long-term DI challenges and practice thinking on their feet with a variety of DI instant challenges. This year we had twenty-six students involved in five different teams, each of which took on one of the DI challenges.
We are the members of two of those teams, and this year we have been working on coming up with a solution to the “Brand Aid” and “Lose to Win” challenges. The first challenge was to develop a jingle, logo and events with a community service focus. We chose to raise awareness about veteran’s issues, especially for older vets. The second challenge revolved around architectural design and structural engineering. We had to design and build a structure made only of wood, glue, tape and/or playing cards. During the testing phase, we had to remove pieces of the structure while it held a standard weight, and the structure was rated based on a ratio of its mass before and after its weight loss. While we tested the efficiency of our structure we also had to present a story about a character who undergoes a transformation.
Our teams
Annie Crotto (’15), Eliza Randall (’15), Zarya Washer (’17) and Kaila Woodard (’17) on the Brand Aid team,
and

Gianna Cialdea (’16), Emma Marcou (’16), Emma Mattson (’16), Matthew Renner (’18), Alanna Sprague (’16), and Mary Shotton (’16) on the Lose to Win team.
Both teams are coached by Bernadette and Jerry Kuhn.
At the NH Destination Imagination State Tournament on March 28th in Hampton, NH, our performances took first place in each challenge and earned us an invitation to represent New Hampshire at the DI Global Finals Tournament at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville from May 20-23. There we will meet teams from around the world who will present their best solutions to the different DI challenges. It will also test our abilities to work as a team to solve the logistical challenges to meet our goal of getting to Global Finals.
We now have six weeks to raise approximately $12,000 to cover the costs for room and board, transportation, and shipping for our equipment. We are working on a variety of fundraising ideas, but $12,000 is a lot of money to raise between now and mid-May. We would greatly appreciate it if you could help us meet our goal by making a tax deductible donation to our team.
