On March 27th I was contacted about a dog in distress. This dog was suffering horribly at the hands of an irresponsible owner/backyard breeder. The dog was a pregnant 5 lb Chihuahua who had been in labor for 4 days, had not received any veterinary care and had most likely been in excruciating pain for the entire 4 days. Because of my love for dogs, I knew I had to help – to give this dog a chance.
When I picked up the dog from the breeder, she was incoherent, bleeding and very near death.
An emergency veterinary hospital was located where she was assessed and immediately taken into surgery.
The amazing veterinarians and staff at the veterinary hospital worked tirelessly to save the lives of mom and puppies, sadly, only one of her 5 puppies survived.
Because of the grave condition of Mom, and the fact that the breeder tried to “help” while she was trying to give birth to a stuck puppy, her intestines and her bowel were ruptured and necrotic After a bowel and intestine resection and a spay, Mom is now on the road to recovery, but not out of the woods. Her puppy, a little boy, is strong, is a fighter and is now being bottle fed. Mom is unable to nurse because of the strong medications she is on to ward off infection.
At this moment, the bill for her care is at $5,000. Every day that she is in intensive care is another $500.00. I have paid for her care personally and will continue to do so until she is healthy enough to be released. I cannot turn my back on this little victim of a backyard breeder. I would be immensely grateful for any and all donations to help with the care of this Mom and her wee babe. Any donations in excess of the amount stated here, will go towards the vetting of the wee puppy.
Please share this story with everyone you know. These dogs need our help. Updates will be posted regularly.
