Hi. My name is Tarek and I'm the owner-chef of Qanoon restaurant in NYC. Qanoon is housed in Chelsea/Manhattan, the neighborhood I called home for the past 12 years. I opened Qanoon October 2019 and dedicated it to my mother who is the inspiration behind the restaurant's concept. My mission is to bring her delicious traditional cooking to NYC and share the uniqueness of Palestinian cuisine with the world.
I have been working in the restaurant industry for 12 years. Success in this field requires long hours, dedication, and sound business sense but without a community of people that drives your mission, it won't go far. The secret sauce are the people who work tirelessly to prepare, cook, and serve you the food. They are Jose, Jason, Oscar, Nasser, Chad and many others who started this journey with me when I opened my first restaurant 7 years ago. They are like my second family.
Amid the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, restaurants are closed and I can no longer deliver. Qanoon is a new restaurant that opened six months ago and I cannot carry the costs of paying wages alongside the costs of rent and replacing perishable food. The funds we're raising will help keep the restaurant alive by paying the essential costs including paying the restaurant workers who are in need of income to cover their expenses. Every small donation will make a huge difference to their lives and their families.
The restaurant industry is one of the hardest hit by this pandemic and the least likely to be bailed out, especially small restaurants like Qanoon. I hesitated before starting this fundraiser but after I saw that this might take longer than anticipated, I realized that Qanoon may not survive by the end of it. My strong passion in Qanoon's mission and the people whose livelihood depend on it urged me to ask for your support.
