Shasta noticed it first and tells of how hard it was for her to initially tell Greg she thought she saw early signs of cognitive decline. Greg can attest that it was also really hard to receive that news. So...what next? They were able to connect with the UC Davis Center for Healthy Aging where Greg was initially diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Then, they were referred to a neurologist who ordered a PET scan that confirmed the real diagnosis: Greg Nelson has Alzheimer’s.

At first, it felt like the ground had disappeared beneath him. A man who has spent his life helping others navigate identity, leadership, and change—what happens when the biggest change of his life is happening inside his own brain? There are moments when Greg feels like he's watching pieces of himself slip out of reach. Mornings when fear shows up before he even opens his eyes. And worst of all, knowing how this will impact the people who love him.

Greg wishes he could remember exactly what Shasta said that day she had the courage to tell him what she was observing, but the details of the conversation are fuzzy now and getting more and more that way. What he does remember are the feelings: frustration, embarrassment... and fear.
