First we want to preface this to say:
A few friends have mentioned this idea to us. It’s not something we normally would consider because this is no one else’s responsibility! So many others in life have it worse. In fact we have went back and forth on this idea so many times. We don’t want anyone to feel guilted into helping just because they know us. Times are different and hard for everyone! This is only if anyone has the extra means and really has it in their hearts to want to help we would be open to that. There’s several close to us that have already helped in various ways and we feel so humbled and grateful for it!
Ever since we moved into our house I (Cassie) have had a lot of fatigue. I went to the Dr for it way back then and nothing was found. For the past couple years I declined severely with over 25 symptoms. My Dr and neurologist have not been able to figure it out. I have been checked for ALS, MS, brain tumors ect with MRIs, EKG, tons of blood work all coming back normal. I saw a neurologist that mentioned small fiber neuropathy and offered medication to try to which I declined. I was about to see a 2nd neurologist when all of the following was discovered.
This has been debilitating in a few ways and has taken so much from my life.
Mold toxicity.
Confirmed with my kinesiologist. He has been the only one that has helped me through this and for a stretch of months even bringing my symptom count down to about 5-10 with nutritional supplemental support.
We had a mold inspection and a lot was discovered. We also did an ERMI test that showed our overall score was 18. Anything over 15 is advised to vacate. It listed the mold species and count for each one. Thirty-six different molds present (including statchybotrys which is the black mold that is most common to hear the dangers of). Five of which were 10 and 100xs higher than normal.
People with CIRS (chronic inflammatory response syndrome) are not able to recognize toxins with their adaptive side of their immune system. Toxins stay and wreak havoc. Healing is a long process.
It honestly has been a nightmare what transpired through this remediation process. More and more mold is being found. Everything that could have gone wrong did. A mistake with proper containment was made first day of remediation. By the evening of the 3rd day I was so confused I couldn’t remember what I was saying AS I was talking. I took Isaac and Shiloh to my moms to stay. Nathan stayed behind that night and said it was absolutely terrifying. He started experiencing a lot of my normal day to day symptoms and without a doubt knew this has been my problem.
We had a water pipe burst, flooring had to be torn out, our heater blower went out, car trouble, etc.
One cause for so much mold was due to no flashing installed when the roof was done a couple years before we moved in. Fourteen years of rain coming in between the walls where the main roof meets with 2nd story.
Another cause of mold is due to an old leak before we moved in under kitchen sink area. The space is large and only the underneath of subfloor mold was able to be removed. It is still in question if the top side that sits under the countertop, sink, cabinets, and tile will need attention for my specific health needs.
A new roof had to be put on after discovering one thing after another wrong with it. Then it was discovered there was original rotting siding under the current siding hiding so much rot on the structure of the house which had to be replaced, and mold on backside of drywall underneath where the original windows were. New siding is underway. Shout out to Above and Beyond Home Improvement for doing everything in their power to help us. Not only doing things the right way, but truly going above and beyond to make sure our house never has any leak issues again! They also discovered so much mold themselves that the mold professionals missed and took care of it. We really don’t know what we would have done without these people!
Insurance will not cover the cost of anything. We need to get the carpet out as carpet acts as a gigantic filter/holder for mold. Because of this concept some mold experts even advise getting rid of all belongings that are porous. It depends on the individual and how sensitive they are.
Where we stand right now is a maxed out hefty HELOC, nearly $10,000 and counting in what we owe to friends and family, and we have no more money for flooring or the rest of the remediation as we are still finding things. We will have to complete the rest of the remediation ourselves. We are setting this at $7,000 and it seems like a ridiculous amount but it’s truly only a fraction of the financial hit. Anything that is acquired will go towards payments.
We always have had excellent credit and we were thankfully able to get approved for a HELOC. I was able to get a part time job to help out even though my body is weak and not well at this time.
Once again this is simply to give an opportunity to anyone who wants to help. We in no way want anyone feeling obligated into giving! Thank you!
