Help my mom beat Breast Cancer!

Donation protected
On May 2019, my world was turned upside down when we, like thousands of others, got one of the hardest and most shocking news.  My mom, my role model, Mayte Prieto, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

For those of you that know my mom, you know that she is an extremely strong and giving person. She would drop everything to help anyone in need and that is one of the many things I admire her for.  Even in a new country, she’s an active volunteer in non-profit organizations, works full time and is a single mother. She has worked extremely hard to give me everything I need and a better life for both of us.

What makes our story different is that in 2014 we had to leave Venezuela due to the political, social and economic crisis. My mom had a good job, but we left our home, our friends, most of our family, and almost everything we owned, arriving here with only what we could fit in our suitcases. We started all over again in the USA looking for a better life, a better education for me, and a better future. Of course, this was challenging for the two of us, but it didn’t stop us from reinventing ourselves and restarting our lives.  We don’t have any relatives living in the same city to help with chemo and other essential daily needs and I don’t have a driver’s license yet. Our closest relatives live 1.5 hour away, where we spent the first phase of the treatment and the surgery recovery.

My mom is strong and positive and determined to fight back the illness. Her attitude amazes me. She had surgery, and we were lucky enough to have the tumor 100% removed. However, based on her diagnosis, the initial treatment involves 16 rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and targeted therapy treatment for at least a full year, followed by 5 to 10 years of medication.

She has great support from her job and has made arrangements to be able to work intermittently during her healing process. Although she has health insurance, the deductible and out of pocket expenses are still high. Being a single income household makes it even more uphill to be able to cover all payments herself.

During all this journey, she’s been blessed with supportive family and friends, a job she loves, great co-workers, and we are confident that she will overcome this obstacle in her life as she has done before. Your financial support here will allow her to reduce the economic burden of this diagnosis and give her a less stressful and safe space to heal. The money will go to:

·        Deductible, co-insurance and out of pocket expenses

·        Non-covered medical expenditures and complementary therapies

·        Caregivers’ travel expenses

We appreciate all your love, support, best wishes, prayers, visits, and calls. If you can contribute with this fundraising, no amount is too small and will be highly valued.

God bless you all!
