My name is Michelle Wilde. I’m a mom and an artist. My teeth are broken. Some are completely missing and others are deteriorating. I lost my first tooth in high school, right before I graduated. I remember being in pain for a week, if not longer, and then eventually the pain finally stopped and I forgot about it as best I could. I didn’t have access to healthcare, let alone dental care. I made it through college with only the occasional toothache but I never could afford to see a dentist for routine care, preventative or otherwise. Fast forward to the beginning of the pandemic and I moved in with my now husband and due to being high risk, I had to quit my job. That’s when things really took a turn for me, regarding my dental health. I lost another tooth and had frequent toothaches and still no means to see a dentist. Then in December of 2020 I found out that I was pregnant and as happens to many women, I suffered with toothloss and pain during my pregnancy. I now have a two year old that I love with all my heart, and I wouldn’t trade my baby for all the healthy teeth in the world. But that also means I want to be here to see him grow up and live a happy, healthy life. I know in my heart, that in order to do so I need to do all I can to ensure my own health. So I’ve been on a journey to get as healthy as a possibly can. The trouble is, Medicaid doesn’t cover dental work for adults, and my husband’s work insurance is just not enough to cover even the basics of what I need done. I was quoted about $14,000 by Aspen Dental, but to be completely honest, I’ve lost two more teeth, almost entirely, since I was last seen by them. I’ve also recently been diagnosed with Achalasia, which has led to malnourishment and acid reflux, both of which have also contributed to the rapid decline of my oral health. At this point in time, I’m just doing all I can to not feel completely hopeless with all of this. I have surgery for the Achalasia in April of this year (2024) and after that my focus is going to be entirely on taking care of my teeth however I can. Any help with this would be deeply appreciated, whether that’s through donating or sharing. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
