Support for the Rosa Family

May 17th, 2010 is a day forever ingrained in the Rosa’s family's head. They received a devastating phone call that their 15-year-old son, Andrew, was struck by a car while riding his bike. The force of the impact left him in a coma for months while he fought for his life in Stony Brook Hospital’s PICU. But Andrew was more than just his accident- he was a junior firefighter, BMX biker, snowboarder, and had big dreams for the future. He was adored and loved by everyone who crossed paths with him. Andrew fought hard these last 14 years, defying the slim odds the doctors predicted for him. But none of his success could’ve been possible without the immense amount of love and support he received from his family and friends. If you’ve had the pleasure of knowing the Rosa’s, you know that their entire life revolved around Andrew and giving him the best life possible. Their whole house is decked out with equipment and machines to help provide Andrew with the highest level of care- they even have a cool wheelchair lift so he could go in the pool during the summer! And despite their own tragedy, they are the type of family who would give you the shirt off their back. They are fierce advocates, and always fight for what is right. Marissa, Andrew’s sister, even pursued a nursing degree and ended up becoming a pediatric nurse at Stony Brook as a way to give back to all of those who helped care for Andrew.
Unfortunately, Andrew has been in and out of the hospital these last few months battling worsening respiratory infections. It is with heavy hearts, we are saddened to say, he lost his battle last night. He was surrounded by all of those who loved him as he peacefully passed. The Rosa family has experienced an incredible deal of heartbreak since the day of the accident 14 years ago. We thought it would be nice to come together as a community and help out this grieving family. Between months of hospital stays, at home medical supplies, and funeral costs, there are a lot of unanticipated expenses. If anyone is able to donate or share this post to help alleviate some financial burden, that would mean the world to us.
Thank you in advance!
